Chapter - 1
I was admitted to Lotterdale City Hospital in a dreadful state. They say I was hanging on by a thread. I don't really remember how it happened but on the night of 24 august I found myself in a hospital bed with a nurse named Gladis near my bedside.
"Where am I?" I had asked when I first gained consciousness.
"Oh good you're up. I was beginning to get a little worried sweetheart."
"Where am I" I asked once more my head getting a bit clearer.
"You are at Lotterdale City Hospital. Now look here for me" she said shining a light in my eyes.
"What happened?" I asked getting a bit worried because I didn't remember coming here.
"There was an accident sweetheart. But no need to worry everything is fine now." She said with a comforting smile but there was something else, I could see it in her eyes.
"What, what is it?" I asked "Oh my god! I didn't get someone did I?" I panicked. She had pulled me in a sitting position. "Oh dear god no! Nothing of the sort happened." I sighed with relief. "But......" she trailed off. "But what?" I asked getting anxious again.
"You must understand you were in that car for a while and the doctors did their best"
"But ..."
"But...." She sighed as if she'd rather be anywhere but here "But you still lost the motor control of the lower half of your body. That means you are now paralysed from your waist below."
Oh! What a thunderclap these words were to me! I still remember my reaction as clear as day. "What?!" I had cried. I point blank refused to believe what this woman was telling me. I ripped off the blanket that was covering my inanimate legs and I began my struggle. "YOU...you are LYING AND I AM GOING TO PROVE YOU WRONG!" I screamed at poor old Gladis and tried to get out of that infernal bed failing which I proceeded to scream and curse "Come. On. You. Stupid. Things. WORK!" then came disbelief "No, no, NO! This isn't happening. It isn't happening. I am just, I am just dreaming, just having a nightmare. That's it I am having a nightmare and I am going to wake up now." Said I while repeatedly pinching myself. But as expected it was all for naught and then I cried. Gladis tried to hug and comfort me "There, there sweetheart it's okay now. You will be alright now." she said. But I pushed her away. I sobbed in my pillow the rest of that night. That whole night was drowned in tears and no one came to disturb me probably because Gladis told them I needed that time alone to process the fact that I would never walk again. By the next morning I had no more tears left all I did feel was this empty numbness and it wasn't just in my legs.
