The Truth

"What, what is it?" asked Bethany frantically.

"Call Gavin, and tell him that you're leaving him."

"What?"

"Tell him you guys can't be together anymore and that you're leaving him, taking Harper with you."

"Are you insane? Why would I do that?"

"Because you want your son to live don't you?"

"What does Gavin have to do with any of this?"

"Ok to tell you the truth, I don't like Gavin. I think you could do better"

"Gavin is a fine man. I am very much happy with him."

"But I'm not happy about you with him and right now, you should only be worrying about my feelings,Beth."

Bethany was quiet. She didn't want to respond. She didn't want to take any risk with Harper. She was hoping that by not resisting he would forget about his request. If I talk back, he'll push me to it further, she thought. I have to pretend that I'm not bothered. Then suddenly, he took out his revolver and pointed it at her. He took Bethanys cell phone out of his pocket and handed it to her.

"I've changed my mind" he said. "Harper doesn't have to suffer, he has his father. I want you Bethany. So if i can't have you, no one can."

He slowly held the phone inches away from her face.

"Call him"

"Who do you think you are huh? That you're just going to tell me what do and I'll listen?"

He clenched his jaw tight and tightened his grip on the revolver.

"I've dealt with weak and abusive men stronger than you."

"What?"

"Gavin... is not Harper's real father."

"Then who is?"

"Dan. My ex-husband"

"Why did you leave him?"

"He was afraid. He was a coward afraid of taking his own responsibility. He didn't want Harper because he would get in the way of his crooked lifestyle. He was afraid of losing his control on someone. And do you know what happened to him? I left him. And now he's in jail, drunk, rotting. That's what men like him deserve. That's what men like you deserve. And that's exactly what they get!"

Terrance felt his face grow hot. His palm grew sweaty and his grip on the revolver fidgeted.

" I chose Gavin. He isn't afraid of rejection. He loves Harper. And I love him. And if you think for one second that I'm going to leave Gavin for someone like you, you're mistaken."

"So you're not going to listen to me?"

"No"

"Well then, we'll have to settle this a different way."
