Bethany Davis was awoken in the early crack of dawn by the sound of a baby crying. As she went to the nursery, she saw her young son Harper wailing loudly.
" Harper, baby what's wrong?" She cooed. She picked him up from his crib and started rocking him back and forth in her arms. She moved towards the large window in the room and looked out. Waves of green pine trees awaited her. So peaceful she thought. So much more peaceful than the life she was living before.
A tear fell down on her golden tan skin as her curls gently moved as the wind blew past the window. Her caressing arms held Harper dearly, as her eyes welled up with tears. She remembered being pregnant with Harper, having arguments daily with her former husband Dan- about the bills and expenses. She remembered how she used to cry herself to sleep everyday after being verbally threatened and put down constantly by Dan. Then she remembered the day when Dan came home drunk. She remembered the awful smell that came from his clothes as she went near him. She remembered the fit he threw after seeing nothing prepared for him in the fridge. She recalled herself telling him that she was feeling bad today and that she had waited for him all day so that they could go to the doctor. He snarled and then the words came out of his mouth-" I don't want the baby, throw him out." She remembered staring at him with her eyes wide open. He reached for a kitchen knife and started to come towards her. "I'll end this show myself" he said as he chased her down the hallway. Bethany raced down the stairs to the hall closet and locked herself in there. She was sobbing and gasping for air, wondering where to run to. Soon enough she had fallen asleep from the fear.
When she regained consciousness, she was still in the hall closet, unharmed. She turned the knob slowly and peered out. There was no one in sight. She slowly pushed the door open. The tears from last night were still drying on her face. She stepped out of the closet and looked up at the stairs. There had been no one there. She had quickly grabbed her car keys from her jacket and was out the door.
She remembered driving frantically to her sisters house miles away. Ever since then, her life had taken a new start. She left Dan and didn't even tell him about Harper being born. She had gotten a new job, had remarried an investment banker who lived next door to her sister, had started a new life. Her husband Gavin was a kind, and understanding man. He held Harper so close to his heart, and didn't make Bethany feel for a second that he wasn't his real father. Bethany was happy with her life now, but the scars from her past years still haunted her occasionally. But, she was trying her best to get better and forgot the awful memories, and Gavin and Harper were there for her every step.
Harper stopped crying now, as Bethany rocked him without thinking. When she saw that he was asleep, she put him back in his crib and looked out the window to the sun majestically rising.
