Alexis's POV
"Just hours left till it's your birthday!" My mom seemed more exited then I was for my birthday tomorrow. She wasn't that great at keeping secrets she was probably doing the same old surprise party. "Mom I think I'm gonna go to bed, I'm kinda tired."
"Your not gonna finish this episode of scandal with me?"
"Fine." I sat back down and snuggled under the blanket with her. As soon as the show ended I went upstairs to my room. It felt so awkward to sleep here. I changed into my pajamas and brushed my teeth. When I finally got under my blue covers I did not feel like I was home. I felt that I was sleeping over a friends house in their junky old mattress on the floor. But no, it was my bed, the bed I slept in for so many years. But it didn't feel like home at all. I pushed my thoughts away and allowed myself to fall asleep.
The next morning I woke up to miley Cyrus singing in my kitchen.
Well she wasn't literally singing in my kitchen but my dad weirdly enough loved her music... He had 'adore you' playing. I threw a pair of shorts and a t-shirt on and went down stairs.
I found two giant plates full of Belgian waffles on the table. Strawberries and whip cream. My favorite. "DAD!! OMYGOSH I LOVE IT!!" He turned away from the oven, smiling at me. "Come take a seat"
I sat down at one of the island stools and grabbed some food. So far my birthday was going great.
After I finished breakfast I went upstairs to change. It was colder here than California but I still wore shorts and a tank top, but I put a sweater over it. I decided to take some hours to go to the mall by myself because i kinda needed a break from everyone. Also I bet my mom needed time to set up her little surprise party.
I went to the mall and shopped for awhile at some of my favorite stores; I went to pink, urban outfitters, splash, and jennice shoe apparel.
I started of get hungry and headed down to the food court. As I was eating my salad three girls approached me. One with long, straight, blond hair and bright blue eyes. Another with perfect curled brown hair and a small torso but long legs. And the last with reddish brown straight hair, greenish eyes, and a sweet smile.
And that's when I noticed the last girl, was Carmen. Carmen Bradley. One of my closest friends all through elementary and part of middle school. She moved a couple towns over and I hadn't seen her awhile. I stood up and walked towards her. I couldn't keep the smile off my face. "CARMEN! OMYGOSH HIII! IVE MISSED YOU SO MUCH!"
and that's when her smile dropped. Her face turned all confused. She looked at me and I could tell, she had no clue who I was.
She giggled a little, "umm hi? I'm sorry I don't remember who you are..."
My mouth just dropped. Not because she didn't remember me.
But because she had changed. Dramatically.
She exaggerated 'are' making her sound like a total bitch when she opened her mouth. Carmen and her friends laughed again. The blond girl spoke up again, "Carmen do you even know this girl the slightest bit?" She said this with a laughing voice, like she was making fun of me.
I had totally froze when I noticed how much she changed. Her hair, she never cared about and now she has been straightening it. She had a full layer of makeup and no chips in what looked like her everyday blue nail polish. She had rings all over her fingers, two necklaces, and about eighty bracelets on.
That's when I noticed it. The bracelet I gave to her before she left. It was a silver bracelet with one silver charm. The charm was a tree. The tree we would climb every day. It was our tree.
"The tree bracelet..." I spoke.
"What did you say?" It was the curly haired one this time.
"Carmen your wearing the tree bracelet I gave to you before you left..."
Her lips made a small smile, but disappeared quickly.
"Lex?..." I nodded.
"OMYGOD ITS YOU!!! IVE MISSED YOU SO MUCH! WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN UP TO? IM SO SORRY I DIDNT RECOGNIZE YOUR FACE!"
I laughed, "haha heyy. I've missed you too. Nothing really actually.. And ya it's totally fine. What brings you back to town?"
"There really isn't a nice mall where I live so we came here."
We all sat down at my table and talked for a little bit. An hour went by and we just talked and talked and talked.
"WAIT! Lex... Isn't it your birthday?!"
"Yes, how did you remember?"
"I would never forget your birthday!"
At about five o'clock I headed home. My birthday was going great so far. And I had a feeling the best part was about to come. But I don't know it would be difficult to beat seeing Carmen again.
I pulled in the drive way and the house was dark. No cars any where in sight. My parents were good this year.
I walked up the driveway and started to unlock the door. When I opened the door I prepared myself, but nothing came. I saw a candle on the dining room table. I closed the door and hung up my coat, taking off my shoes. I walked around towards the living room and no one was home.
What the heck?
This is weird now.
I walked towards the kitchen and that's when my mouth dropped. My birthday probably just took a u-turn.
