A/N: The song is Hero by Abandon. I changed some of the lyrics because it was a very Christian song and a few lines didn't fit, I even took a couple out just to make it flow better. I've also never written or read a song fan fiction before so we'll see how it goes :)

He walked the dirty streets, famous for nothing.

Steve Rogers was never a popular guy back in the forties. If anything, he was ignored and made a fool of more times than not. Of course, even when he had nothing, he had Bucky Barnes, his best friend. After an experiment lead by Howard Stark, father of Tony Stark, he became the hero everyone knew of as Captain America but it was not a life he was too terribly fond of.

"That's Steve Rogers!" The shrill cries sounded around him every time he left his home. It was unbearable to the point that he wore a worn out baseball cap and sunglasses just to maintain sanity in the public eye.

It was a wonderful feeling to walk down the streets of downtown New York City and be just another human being on his way to the supermarket or even a cubicle office job. As he went on his way, he finally felt normal, not overly famous or overly popular.

The only other time he felt this way was when he was locked away in his apartment or off doing research in the Avenger's Tower. They were all heroes, so they shared the lack of privacy and the hatred for it. Well, all of them except for Tony who seemed to bask in the spotlight. The one person to really make Steve feel at home and at peace, was (Y/N), the girl he met at a supermarket.

He said "come follow me"and they came.

It was as though his following could amass in moments notice, surrounding him and taking him by surprise in just seconds. When he was in the supermarket, buying some plums and other fruits, someone bumped into him and his cap fell off, landing on the floor with a soft thud.

"Steve Rogers?!" A voice called out and in an instant he was surrounded by a multitude of women all calling for his autograph. He was overwhelmed by the sheer amount of people who now seemed to be in the produce section of the supermarket and was quick to call out to them.

"Please, follow me out of the store and I'll see what I can do," the timid smile on his face was obvious, the stress of being surrounded making his PTSD worsen. Of course, they followed him out into the parking lot where he had them all line up and signed every last paper he could manage.

A face like all the rest but something was different.

Steve definitely tried his hardest, not wanting anyone to feel left out or forgotten. The line was just so astoundingly long that he had to cut the 'signing' short. He felt awful about it, pain resonating in his chest that he wasn't able to fulfill all the requests of his fans.

"Thank you so much Steve," a fan stumbled along side of him, a prosthetic leg sticking out from underneath of the shorts she wore. "You know, you're just an average guy. You look like everyone else and act like everyone else too. Does it ever get overwhelming all these fans?"

"Of course it does," Steve smiled at the girl behind him, placing the cap and sunglasses back on to once again disguise himself. "It gets harder each time I'm surrounded and stuck in one place. I didn't want to disappoint anyone though and tell them I couldn't sign their papers or their hats because I was too busy. I would come off as a jerk who doesn't care about the people who love him."

"That's why you're different," a wide smile spread across the girls face, causing one to break out on Steve's too. "You care so much about the little people. Tony Stark would never feel that way about any of us, you know that?"

He would lead the way.

"Everyone looks up to you in a way you can't even imagine," the smile on the girls face grew. "My name is (Y/N) and you're my hero. You saved my life in the Loki incident. I still remember the way you used your shield to protect me before giving me the biggest grin." Steve stopped in his tracks and the girl stopped beside him.
