“I cannot believe my son is growing up and moving out.” My mother spoke with tears in her eyes.
“I wish you could stay a bit longer”
“Mom I’m going to stay with Troy, Troy Jackson you remember him right? We were best friends back in school. He is living in an apartment just outside New York City. Besides I have a job interview in New York next Tuesday, so he has agreed to let me stay over in his apartment at least until I get back on my feet. I can’t stay a child forever I’m twenty three now. I have spent the past five years in university over in the city waiting for this moment.” I replied.
“Oh alright, and no matter your age you’ll always remain a child in my eyes. Make sure you come and visit me I will always live here in this little village. Why couldn’t you live in the village here in Ghana? She asked.
“The village life just isn’t for me; I have big dreams for you and this village. Pray for me always. I love you mom.” I said giving her the longest hug in my life. She kissed me on the cheek and replied.
“I love you too my son, and always will.” She said as I swung my traveling bag over my shoulder and walked out the door.
I checked my watch. I had to travel twenty minutes by a motor bike to reach the nearest town, and hop on a bus to the airport. It was seven pm and my flight takes off at nine. I paid a commercial bike rider to take me out of the village.
About fifteen minutes had passed when I noticed a portion of the night sky light up. It looked like an explosion. I was completely in awe. Whatever it was it must have been pretty big because there were pieces of what looked like rock chucks falling from the explosion. The chunks spread out each heading in a different direction, almost as if it was on queue.
“My God.” The man whispered as he looked up. I watched the rock chunks fall out of sight, all but one. My heart sank as I noticed it was falling in our direction. We were moving way too quickly to stop.
“Hey... hey watch out slow down! Listen to me you are we are going to have to ditch the motorcycle.” I Shouted.
“What? No way! The driver looked up but the rock was getting to close for my comfort. There was no more than a split second to make a decision. I took a deep breath and leaped off of the motorcycle. I rolled across the dirt road.
“Hurry up and jump!” I shouted out to him, but I could already see it was too late.
The rock smashed into the ground creating a large crater. I couldn’t believe what just happened. It was so unreal. The rock was had streaks glowing an orange colour. I started to run towards it. The rock looked extremely hot. I expected to feel the air around me get thick and hot but as I drew closer and I was right. The air was choking me. I was so frightened and shocked that my body started to have an adrenaline rush. I suddenly felt that I could still help him. I had totally forgotten all the heat and how hot the rock was. I desperately rapped my hands around the rock and started to push, but with no luck. The adrenaline had left and all my senses came back to me all at once. I felt myself choke once more, and the excruciating pain in my arms was just too unbearable. I struggled to walk away from the rock but with in my first three steps I collapsed. Everything around me was orange and at that moment I was prepared to die, I closed my eyes not knowing if they would ever be opened again.
My eyes flew open and I gasped for air. I looked at my hands.
“No burns?” I thought aloud. I could have sworn I saw burn marks before I passed out. The rock had dried up and crumbled into smaller rocks the size of soccer balls. I looked around not surprised to see no one anywhere near. I looked back at the rock, and took a deep breath.
