AUSTIN DANIELS
"Sophie please," I begged, my heart literally breaking, as my mate told me she hated me.
"Just go," she said, her voice wasn't angry like it seemed it should have been; it was broken, sad. Not anything like the voice of the Sophie I knew.
"But I love you," I protested, my eyes pleading with her to just let me stay.
She let out a humorless snort. "If you loved me you wouldn't have cheated on me."
I looked at her, a broken man. She was right. I knew she was right, but I did love her, more than anything. "Don't say that, you know you I love you."
"I thought you did, but now I'm not so sure." I could tell by the way she was looking at me that she was getting angry, her hurt being pushed to the back of her mind.
"If you loved me you wouldn't have killed our pup!" she continued, raising her voice.
"What?" I asked incredulously. "This is not my fault! If you would have listened to me when I called your name, this wouldn't have happened."
"Well, if you hadn't cheated on me in the first place, I wouldn't have even been in that situation," she countered. I had to agree with her on that, but she was still just as much at fault as I was.
"Sophie I don't want to fight," I said grabbing for her hand. "We're mates."
She let me hold her hand for a moment looking into my eyes, before she seemed to think better of it and pulled her hand away from me.
"You're no mate of mine," she spit out, bitterly. "I want you out right now. How dare you try to blame the death of our pup on me."
"I wasn't--"
"Do you want me to scream? Because I'll scream," she warned.
"Sophie," I pleaded.
"Austin I really just want to be alone right now."
"Okay, I'll leave, but only if you promise to talk to me when you get out of the hospital," I said getting up from where I was seated. I stretched my arms, hearing my bones crack from being in the same spot for so long.
"Fine." She was still scowling at me, but at least she was agreeing to talk to me.
"I love you," I said as I stood in the doorway of the hospital room.
I waited for a reply, but when none came, I quietly shut the door. As I walked down the halls of the hospital, taking the elevator to the main floor, I could feel tears threatening to fall, but I didn't let them. I wouldn't let them until I was alone. An Alpha wasn't suppose to cry, no matter what the circumstances, at least in front of others.
I burst into tears right as I shut the door to my car. I put my head on the steering wheel as I silently weeped, there was no undoing this, I had cheated on my mate and our unborn pup had died.
Suddenly, a memory of the first time I'd ever seen Sophie came back to me, and through my tears, a slight smile took over my face.
"Come on Austin," my friend Maggie begged, dragging me into the party.
"It's no use, I'm not going to find my mate on the first day I'm able to recognize her!" I protested, trying to pull my arm out of her grasp.
"You never know. You're never gonna find her if you don't look," she said, in a sing-song voice, as we entered the loud and smoke filled house. I froze before we could even get a couple of feet in.
The strong smell of Vanilla engulfed me and my eyes frantically searched for the source. It was the best thing I'd ever smelled, and I was almost positive that it was the scent of my mate.
"Do you smell her?" Maggie questioned excitedly, distracting me from my frantic search.
"Sshhh," I said as I walked deeper into the jumble of bodies. As I turned to my left, my eyes were instantly drawn to a set of pale blue ones. Even in a room filled with people, I was able to find her.
The music that had seemed to be blaring just moments earlier, now ceased to exist. The only thing I could hear was my heavy breathing as I neared her.
I wrapped my arms around her, planting a kiss on her lips, she responded with just as much urgency as I was kissing her with. I didn't even know her name, and yet, I was prepared to give up everything for her. She was my mate.
I knew in that moment that I would never do anything to hurt her, she was mine and I was her's, and nothing would ever change that.
As I snapped back into reality I realized that I couldn't live without her, I would get her back, I would get her to forgive me. I had to.
