CHAPTER ONE

My sleep routine had been disturbed that day with the sound of my doorbell at 7:30 in the morning. I took a moment before standing up to see if the noise would stop and I could go back to sleep but it didn't, someone just couldn't wait to see. Usually I only sleep in my underwear and an oversized hoodie so I had to put on some pants before answering the door. God knows how embarrassing the situation would be if I didn’t.

After a couple of minutes the doorbell and the knocking on the door increased. "I'm coming!" I yelled from my room but it was useless, I knew they couldn't hear me. When I was finally sort of presentable I ran down the spiral stairs that led to the living room and quickly made my way to the front door.

As I opened the black metal door my sister greeted me with an annoying look. "Finally, I thought you were dead for a moment." She joked, passing right beside me.

"Where do I put these?" She held an uncountable amount of shopping bags in her hands.

"What's inside?" I asked her, clueless of what she might have bought.

"Stuff for the bridal shower." Oh. I should have guessed but with Rebecca you never know.

"Put them there." I pointed at the large kitchen counter that also worked as a breakfast bar.

She put the bags down exactly where I told her to and leaned against the counter, facing me. "So, I planned a little treat for us today." A wide smile formed on her lips. "We're going to the spa, then we're going to buy some clothes for tonight.”

Today was her bridal shower, she's been waiting for this night since Brody, her fiancé, proposed to her a few months ago. There’s nothing like a pre-party, right? It was her last week as a single woman and damn, she was going to enjoy it.

I sighed in defeat, I was fucking mad that she felt the urge to wake me up so early on a Saturday morning but it was her special day so it was understandable.

"Let me just take a quick shower first." I told her before going back upstairs. "Make yourself at home." I yelled from my room while getting into the bathroom.

It was summer, the streets where filled with girls in short shorts and boys in tank tops. Personally, I liked that, it gave girls the opportunity to show off, but sadly for me there was no one to impress in this city anyway, I had just moved in a few weeks ago from Connecticut and I barely knew anyone. My sister on the other hand has lived here for quite a while now, she's a writer at one of those local magazines, that not a lot of people read but it still is quite known.

After getting out of the shower I put my hair up in a bun as fast as I could and looked for something clean to wear. I’m not much of the getting ready type of girl but I did like to play dress up sometimes, so I guess that’s why my closet is full of shit I’ll never wear. Rebecca was the definition of beauty, when we were little I hated her, she had those beautiful green eyes that made everyone instantly like her while me on the other hand had to stick with plain brown eyes.

"Are you ready?" I heard my sister ask from downstairs.

"Just one more thing," I grabbed my bag from the bed and quickly made my way to her. "Ready."

She looked down at her watch and rolled her eyes. "Great, we only have 30 minutes to get to the spa and with New York's traffic I doubt we're going to make it."

"Don't be so negative, come on." I pulled her towards the door.

Once we left the apartment building we jumped into a cab and headed straight to the spa. Thankfully we got there just in time because an old woman was trying to convince the receptionist to give her our reservation.
