Chapter Four: Radiation

I was working on the materials for the Seamoth, and planning to go into the Aurora to scan parts for the Seamoth. Mark was sitting by the compartment, counting the materials we had and what food and water we had left.

"What did you mean by saying that you have authority too?" I ask, and Mark rolls his eyes.

"The Captain is my uncle. Never really cared for him, but he still gave me authority about our second mission."

"I never gave him the permission to tell anyone. It was mainly my mission. I am the highest ranked officer." I answer, putting down my materials for the Seamoths, glaring at him.

"Cool your jets, Miss Vale-"

"Warning. Local radiation readings suggest a quantum detonation will occur with a probability of 85.5%. Advise observing a 10km safety range."

"What?!" Mark shouts, as he leaps up. We both scramble up the ladder and to the outside, and we both sit on the top of the Lifepod, as we watched the Aurora intently. I was honestly terrified that, probably, our only way home was going to blow up.

"Emergency: Seismic readings suggest a quantum detonation has occurred in the Aurora's drive core. The reactor will reach a super critical state in T 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3-3-3, 2- 1."

The Aurora exploded, and Mark grabs me as the energy surge sent us flying backwards into the water. I screamed, right before falling into the water, and Mark keeps a concrete hold on me, as he forces us both to breach the waves. I looked to the Aurora, and all of my hope was crushed.

The entire front was gone, except for some metal hanging off.  The back had a little blown out, and almost everything inside exposed was burning. Mark had his hand on my head, and my head was pressed against his shoulder.

"How are we gonna get home?"

"I-I don't know."

Even he didn't have a clever remark.

"Hold your breath." Mark says, and I did. He pulled us underwater and back into the Lifepod. He went up first, then pulled me up, as I took a breath and wiped the water from my eyes. I looked up at Mark, who was looking at me worriedly. "Are you alright-"

I hugged him tightly.

He was speechless.

The night passed with fabricating things and barely speaking. We were both devastated.

I was outside with Mark, testing our new oxygen tanks I had just made.

"Are you sure we should investigate the Aurora this early after the explosion?" Mark asks worriedly, he seemed anxious. "I mean, I love you and all, but this might be dangerous."
I choked on my words, and I glanced at him with a stern glare. "Stop being a wimp and man up."

He rolls his eyes. "Oh come on, I am a man!"

"Says the guy who screamed when we were racing the Seaglide. Speaking of Seaglides, here's yours." I hand him a brand new Seaglide, and he smiles happily.

"Let's go get a Seamoth!"

"Most likely a Cyclops, but that's close enough." I answer, and my Seaglide swims forwards, Mark follows me. The Shallows were dimly colorful, since we were out at the crack of dawn. Our suits were radiation suits, we had scanners, repair tools, and Mark had a survival knife. He claimed he needed it for 'fish defense', or whatever. I had a reinforced survival knife, and a fire extinguisher. I was armed for anything.

It was a long trip from our Lifepod, but it was worth it. I had already found an entrance into the Aurora from the original blast area. It was odd for me, it seemed silent. We swam through the hole, and through a couple school of fish. We dodged a few walls, and navigated through the penta-inforced shell of the Aurora.
