Maddox woke up and yawned. His first day that he didn't have training. Finally, maybe he could go explore a little bit. But wait. He had to go to the boss' office for the kid. What was his name again? Fre-- no...
"It's Ferris. Maddox, open this damned door, or I'll open it myself!" A small voice interrupted his thoughts.
Maddox walked drowsily to the door and opened it, to have Ferris shove him aside and barge into the room.
"Maddox. I thought told you to be with me in the Boss's office today. So where were you when I needed you?" Ferris shouted up, after slamming the door shut behind him.
"Ferris, I'm so sorry. Can I come in now?" Maddox asked, still stretching to wake up.
Ferris turned away. "Maddox, just... well... tomorrow. Tomorrow get up early and be there. By at least five AM. Please."
"Thank you so much Ferris, I won't let you down this time!"
"The thing is that i usually don't give second chances. I don't believe in then, nor do I wish to aid people, however I am getting desperate and I need all the help i can get."
Ferris left the room, smiling back to Maddox._
After a long day of hanging around the base with little to do, Maddox eagerly accepted the sweet release of sleep. However, his alarm clock rang loudly near his ear at four thirty, and he was jolted awake. He leapt from his bunk and slowly made his way through the almost silent base to the boss's office. On his way there, he was tripped and a hand pressed over his mouth. "Geez, are you trying to wake everyone up? Be quieter! And don't leave any mark of your trail. Next time, if there is one, wear socks or better yet, bare feet." Ferris' voice said from under a black dyed burlap cloak.
Maddox nodded and tapped the hand that was still over his mouth.
"Oh. Sorry." Ferris removed his hand and brushed it off, disgusted, on his pant leg. "Follow me." He motioned down a dark hallway with a single, almost burned out bulb at the end.
The white haired boy stopped abruptly at a door that was painted the same color as the wall, with only a small silver doorknob to indicate its existence. He stood and waited for Maddox to get the hint. He turned the knob slowly, keeping the door still shut tight. Counting down from five on his other hand, he nodded quickly to Maddox. At zero, he slammed the door open, and stopped it just before it hit the wall behind. A gust of air blew into the room and came flying back out. The room was rounded at the opposite end, and had thin, 3-d stripes along it. A desk sat to the right side, and a chair behind it. A cactus with menacing thorns sat opposite the desk and a small white rose garden. The room was dimly lit, and a trail of cigarette smoke came from begin the chair.
"Uncle. I've come to ask you for a favor." Ferris said firmly, hiding the hint of nervousness in his throat.
The chair turned around, and the Boss tipped his cigarette to the ashtray and blew a smoke ring to the two at the doorway. "What is it?" He asked, narrowing his eyes at Maddox.
"I, well I came to ask about..." He glanced down to Ferris for advice, but his head was to the ground.
"You came to ask about Ferris?" He asked Maddox, who was trembling.
"Well..."
"Yes uncle. He came to ask about me. He's just a little bit shy right now. I would be too, if it were my first time being in the presence of someone so powerful."
The boss nodded, agreeing with the statement. "I see. Well now spit it out boy, I've not got all day! I go to work at 5:30, so make it quick."
Maddox stuttered again. "I came to ask.... To ask... If I could move to Ferris' room!"
Ferris looked up to Maddox, smiling a smile that said 'what the hell are you doing, boy?"
The boss smiled and laughed. "Oh Ferris! This will be so fun! You know, Maddox is the only one relatively close to your age here, and I think you two will get along so well!"
Ferris held Maddox's hand like a small child would an older sibling and secretly squeezed so hard that the veins in Maddox's hand almost popped.
"I can get him settled in, uncle. Come along, Maddox!" Ferris dragged Maddox from the room and back into his considerably larger, more luxurious room.
"Maddox you idiotic, brainless, moronic pile of amateur trash! Terrible job, just absolutely horrific.... but as a first-timer, you did outstandingly well! Not my original plan, but it's still open-ended enough that I can work with it." Ferris said.
"Are you sure it's okay? I wish i wasn't so nervous though..." Maddox replied.
"Dont you worry about a thing, Maddox. But from now on, your code name is Verus."
[A/N: "Verus" meaning "true" or "real" in old Latin]
