Torin sat in his office later on that evening thinking about Amber, She was a strong young woman, 24 years old and beautiful. He wasn’t happy with the decision he had to make about her and Emma striking out on their own once Amber had a mate. If he listened to his heart he would let them stay for as long as they liked. However he sensed that she would be a strong Alpha, that becoming more and more evident every day. He couldn’t have three strong alphas in his pack. It would start to confuse his other pack members and it may bring down everything he had built.
He had failed one alpha already, his son. He would not fail another. He would encourage Amber to find her own way. He could tell she wouldn’t be going around changing humans. He had wondered if maybe she would take over his pack but Kiara told him she was pregnant and he knew he would have to let Amber go. It was the right thing to do and this time he would listen to his head and not his heart. Torin looked out the window and thought of Kane, his son. He still couldn’t figure out where he went wrong when he was raising him. Where did he mess up? Torin got the feeling a while ago that he needed to send Kane from his pack and into the world but he hadn’t listened, he thought that if he kept Kane close then he would be able to change some of the disturbing views his son had. He was wrong. Torin sat up straighter. He wouldn’t fail Amber. Torin looked out the window, he would have to start training her as an alpha should be trained. He would also have to introduce her to the world eventually. The packs may not all get along and some packs were just horrible but shifters were responsible for keeping the demons and other mythical troublemakers in line. He would also have to get her tested eventually. He sensed Amber was more than just a shifter.
Amber meanwhile sat in her room reading a book on ‘mythological’ beings. She wasn’t angry at Torin for his decision to have her leave once she found her mate. In fact to her it made sense. She was told most mates for alphas were other alphas and two alpha couples in the same house would be bad. Her eyes skimmed over werewolves, she knew she didn’t have to worry about being turned into one as she was already a shifter. She started reading the section on witches and fell asleep reading about light witches.
Kane watched the house, they would be making their move soon they just had to wait. He had been slowly taking out some of the traps around the pack lands, not enough to alert the pack but enough to make the traps useless. He turned and left the pack house before anyone noticed him. The Alpha conference was coming up and he knew his father attended with Leith every year so he assumed he would attend again this year. That may be the perfect opportunity to strike.
Amber woke to a knock at her door,
“yes?”
“Amber when you have a moment can you come to my office?” Torin asked.
“Sure” She replied. She looked at the clock it was 10am. She had class this afternoon but she had time to see Torin quickly first. Amber quickly showered and threw on some jeans and a t-shirt and went to see Torin.
“Amber, before you left for school I wanted to give you this” He said handing her a book.
“What is it?”
“It’s a book on our society as a whole. One young talented writer decided to write a book so that not everything had to be passed along through elders. So that people new to the world could learn about it on their own if they wished.”
Amber grinned. “Thanks!”
“Not a problem!”
“See you this evening”
“Have fun”
Amber went back to her room and put the book in her art bag. She then went off to school waving to everyone and grabbing some pop tarts on the way out. Once she got there she still had an hour to wait so she started reading the book Torin had given her on a bench outside.
