Chapter one: Japan

I studied my list of assignments, trying to decide if I was bored enough to accept one. None caught my interest. A bank robber who killed the cashier, a mobster who killed an entire family, blah blah blah. I mean these were bad things of course but I really am bored with the same old criminals. Why can't there be something interesting? I skimmed the list one last time, until my eyes fell down to the last name. Kira. I smirked, sitting up and tightening my gloved hands on the paper. Now that was interesting.

I wonder who wanted me to investigate and kill Kira? I shrugged, deciding I really didn't care. The thought of going to Japan and seeing my dear long lost brother again however sounded nice, and working on the Kira case also spiked my interest. A fire burned inside that hadn't in a while. I licked my lips in anticipation. A challenge, that is what I missed so dearly.

I stood up, throwing the paper down onto the ground and grabbing my phone.

"Hello?" Celia, my assignment creator said through the phone.

"I'm taking a case." I say. I hear shuffling like she's jumping around in excitement and she lets out a giddy sound.

"Oh yes! So which one was it that spiked your interest, V? The mobster?" She asked. I play with my gloves as I hold the phone with my shoulder.

"No, the Kira case." I answer. She goes silent.

"But...I didn't put Kira on your list." She says quietly. Well things just got my intriguing. Celia didn't put Kira on my list of assignments? I wonder who did. L? The company president? Whammy house? Or maybe...Kira himself? All were possibilities but only one stuck out. Maybe it was a shinigami.

"Well then all the more reason to go." I say happily, grabbing a truffle from off the counter of my kitchen and popping it into my mouth. She sighs through the phone in exasperation.

"Are you sure you want to take this case, V? I'm not sure if even you can handle Kira. I mean L is having a hard time." She says worriedly.

"Please I'm sure L is just fine. And I've already made up my mind, I'm taking on the Kira case. Can you send someone to pack my belongings? Oh and I'll also need a fake passport to Japan." I say, playing with another truffle before popping it into my mouth, savoring the sweet richness.

"Very well. I'll book you a flight out tomorrow. Goodbye V." She says tiredly. I smirk in satisfaction.

"Goodbye, Celia." I say mockingly and hang up the phone. I bite into another truffle and look out my window, grinning at the outside world. I have feeling this is going to be the most interesting assignment I've had in a long time.

***DEATH NOTE***

I looked around at the city in Japan as to where my brother L and the task force he's working with are staying. And apparently where Kira is. I hurry to the airport bathrooms to fix up my appearance, knowing my usual attire will only make me stand out here. I change out of my black knee length dress and combat boots into white jean shorts, a lilac blouse with white sandals and a black jacket over top. I turn to the mirror to look at my appearance. I brush out my messy light hair from the flight and pull it into two pigtails.

I applied light makeup, going for the normal teenage girl look. Now I would blend in better, but I still couldn't change my abnormal hair color or most importantly, my blood red eyes. My eyes, my curse. Shinigami eyes. I was born with them. Growing up at Whammy house many of the kids would make fun of me for my weird eyes but L would always stand up for me, however I knew he wondered about them as well. I was the only one who knew. I was cursed with the eyes of a shinigami from birth. Everyone around I saw their lifelines with their names floating above their heads.

As I got older, I could turn off the ability somewhat only accessing it when I wanted too however the color stayed the same. I shake off my thoughts and grab my bag and head outside to where I catch a cab to the hotel that L is staying out. It was time I saw my big brother again. I walk inside the hotel and turn to the elevator, climbing up to the level L is on. I grin when I get to his door. I knock two knocks on the door.

"Who is it?" Came Watari's voice.

"The ginger bread man." I say sarcastically. He gasps slightly, recognizing my voice.

"V?" He asks, opening the door and staring at me wide-eyed.

"The one and only." I say with a smirk, posing.

"Who is it Watari?" Came my big brothers voice. I drop my bag and run inside, running towards my brother.

"L!" I shout excitedly, outstretching my arms out to hug him. L's eyes only have a second to widen as I tackle him into a hug on the ground. He squirms beneath me.

"V." He says, small surprise evident in his voice. I grin at him full teeth. "V." He says again in a now exasperated sigh. "What are you doing here?" He asks. I get off of him and look around the hotel room, inspecting every detail.

"On my assignment list Kira's name was there. Surprise, surprise I know. Someone wants me to catch Kira and kill him. So I decided to come out to Japan. Isn't it exciting? I haven't had a case so interesting in like forever." I exaggerate, picking up a dirty pot in the sink and throwing it back in, in disgust.

"No." L says. "I don't want you working on this case." he says, as Watari brings him a plate of sweets. I hover over the sweets, licking my lip at the sight of them. I pluck to pick one up and he moves the plate away. I pout, and then stick my tongue out at him.

"Why not?" I whine.

"You could end up dying. I don't want my baby sister working the kira case." He says. I reach across him and grab on of the sweets and move my arm away before he can take it back.

"Well too bad. I want to work on the kira case; it's the only interesting thing in my life. Besides if I'm here you can keep me out of trouble." I say with a cheeky grin as I eat the sweet.

"You'll get into trouble whether I'm there or not." He says. I shrug.

"True, but here you can help clean up the mess." I say with a smirk. He sighs.

"You're determined to work the case? Very well however there are some conditions. You aren't to tell anyone, even the people you trust most you are my sister, and you aren't to give out your real name." He says. I roll my eyes and give him a 'duh' look.

"I'm reckless not suicidal. Besides no one knows my real name, just as no one knows your real name well besides Watari and you." I say.

"Keep it that way. Next you are to not be around when the task force is here. They'll get suspicious if you suddenly join the group. And you aren't to take risks with your life." He says.

"Fine, Fine. I understand. So who is your main suspect?" I ask eagerly. He stacks up the sweets, and they wobble back and forth but do not fall.

"We only have one suspect. Light Yagami." He says.
