I checked the bag once more before we hit the road to North Carolina. "Chesney. You've went through that bag at least a dozen times this past week. I'm sure you've got everything you need." J.B said coming up behind me.
"Just making sure. You never know if something was really missing." I said. He hugged me from behind. "Don't worry. Worry will put stress on you and the baby." He said. I nodded.
"Your right." I said. He kissed me before we got into the truck to head home. Over the last few weeks we've been moving things from my house to his. I'm so close to my due date I could practically feel R.J moving into position.
We were going down the highway passing through Gastonia when I started to get uncomfortable. After about seventeen minutes of driving I started feeling cramps. "Are you alright?" He asked. I nodded. "I can make it to Charlotte." I said.
It intensified in a matter of seconds. "Maybe." I said. "Just breathe baby. We're almost there." He said. I took a deep breath. As we entered city limits I felt my water break. "How much longer?" I asked.
"Almost there baby. Just a few more seconds. Take a deep breath." He took my hand. I took a deep breath. He kissed my hand. "Sit tight baby girl. It won't be long now." He said.
I took another deep breath. He pulled into the parking lot. A huge contraction rippled through me. I had to nearly double over. "Your good baby." He said. He parked the truck before jumping out and running to my side. I was already unbuckled by the time he was helping me out.
"I can still walk." I told him. He walked behind me into the emergency room. Another contraction hit. I had to stop for a minute to let it pass. I counted two minutes between this one and the last one.
A nurse led us back to a birthing room. "Would you like an epidural?" She asked. "No." J.B said. He had me sit on the bed. The nurse had me change out of my clothes and into a gown.
J.B tied the back of the gown where I couldn't reach for me as another contraction passed. "I don't think he's going to wait." I said. The doctor then came in.
I sat on the bed. "Alrighty let's see how close baby is." He said. I had to lay back against the bed. I gripped J.B's hand tightly. He wiggled his fingers in mine readjusting them.
"Baby's head is already crowning." Oh gosh. "How long have you been in labor?" The doctor asked. "About twenty to thirty minutes." I answered. "That's not very long. Are you sure it hasn't been hours?" He asked.
"If it was then I didn't feel anything." I said. "Looks like baby's been moving since this morning." The doctor said. "Were you in the squatting position any at all today?" He asked. I nodded. "That was the only way I could have gotten comfortable in my seat." I told him.
"We left a motel this morning and went to eat then hit the road. At lunch we got food to go because we were on our way to Mooresville about forty minutes from here. Until about seventeen minutes out of Gastonia." J.B told him.
"So that's when the real contractions started?" He asked. I nodded. I felt like if I even leaned forward that the baby would just pop out. "Ok are you familiar with a squat bar?" The doctor asked. I shook my head.
"It will allow you to stay in the squatting position without leaving the bed. It uses gravity to help push the baby out and since it's already past the pelvic bone due to the position you were in it will be easy for it to just slid out while laying back after every push." The doctor explained.
Once the bar was on the bed I moved to the edge. "Alright ready for the first push?" The doctor asked. I nodded. I could feel J.B behind me watching. "On three. One. Two. Three. Push." I did as I was told.
"I can see it's eyes and nose." He said. "One more push and you can lay back." He said. And again on three I pushed once more. Soon the room was filled with a cry. I laid back and caught my breath before continuing. Every two pushes I'd lay back and catch my breath.
After doing this at least five times I just wanted to continue after rocking back a little. "Can almost see the gender." The doctor said. I pushed once more. I could see our baby's face and shoulders from where I was.
After one more push the doctor said the gender. "It's a baby boy." I knew I was super close to holding him in my arms. I gave one more push before rocking back and pushing once more freeing the baby.
"And would dad like to clip the umbilical cord?" I knew it was over. I laid back happy that it was over and that I could finally hold the life that I was carrying for nine months.
He was taken to get cleaned up. Randy James Mauney was finally in the world. We got pictures of all three of us. I was the one holding our child. No one has seen happiness until they have a child of their own. It's now a new responsibility for us to take on.
While R.J slept I got a shower and got cleaned up. We were moved to a different room for the rest of the night to be discharged in the morning in case of any complications. I could practically sleep with him in my arms.
J.B
I went into complete shock when she started having the contractions. Then instinct kicked in and the next thing I know I'm watching her deliver our baby boy. She looked so perfect when she was holding him. I can't believe their my future. I can't wait to get him home and help her raise him.
