Katie POV:
My eyes flutter open to see the sun peaking through the blinds on the window next to me. I smile at it until I look at the clock on the other side of the room and see it read 12:40am. I mentally smile because Melissa should be here soon. Man, I miss her so much and I've only known her for a day. The sound of the door closing pulled me out of my thoughts. I look over to see a big middle aged man walking over. Before he can get a word out I start to panic and I screamed.I yelled for Melissa over and over again until I see her bolt into the room and over to me, pulling me into her side as I sob but try to calm down. Once I did enough to focus I notice Melissa was scolding the man for coming in here after she told him and everyone else not to. He left, looking a little freaked out and closed the door behind him. When it was closed Melissa and I just sat there in the silence until she sighed and knelt beside the bed. I look at her confused as she puts some papers I didn't see before on the table and then looked at me before she spoke.
"Sweetie I have two REALLY important things to talk to you about. An I need you to listen carefully to both ok?"
I nodded my head still confused but she continued.
"Alright. Sweetie I don't really know how to tell you this but... when the sheriff and I looked you up so we could contact someone for you a file came up. Katie the same week you were taken, your mother, brother, grandmother and father were all killed. I'm so sorry hun."
Staring at Melissa I saw in her eyes that she was telling me the truth and that she was truly sorry. She even had slightly teary eyes. Once I processed everything I just heard, I cried. I cried until I could barely breath. I cried for my mother, she was my best friend. My brother and I never really got along because he wanted a little brother like my father wanted another son which is why I think he left but I still missed him. Part of my world just crumbled to ashes before me and I couldn't fix it. Melissa had gotten on the bed again and was holding me supportively and motherly. It was nice to know I still had one person I could trust. After a few minutes Melissa spoke again.
"Hun I know this is really hard but I still have one other thing to tell you."
Gulping I nodded my head slightly as a way to say go on.
"When I found out they would have to send you to foster care since there was nobody to take care of you I got to thinking. I don't know why but I get the same motherly feeling with you that I get with my son at home. An I know you trust me and only me so I was wondering if you would be ok with me adopting you. It's up to you though."
With those words I started to cry again but this time out of pure joy. She just met me and was willing to take care of me like her own kid. Realizing she still needed an answer I nodded.
"I would love that" I managed to choke out.
She smiled then grabbed the papers from earlier and signed them. That's when I realized those were my adoption papers. I have a home again and this time it's not going anywhere.
"Alright sweetie you'll be officially my daughter when this is finalized tomorrow then we can go home ok?"
I smiled up at her and nodded. She hugged me which I return with a little hesitation. After we let go I told her I had to go to the bathroom. When I got there I locked the door behind me and looked at my reflection for the first time in a few months. I was unhealthily skinny and my hair needed to be brushed and washed. Remembering the bite from a few days ago I pulled up the hospital gown to see nothing on my hip. This confused me because it should be scabbed or even scarred, but it was just my regular tan skin with nothing on it. I also noticed that most of my bruises and scars were gone. I shrugged it off and walked back out only to have a stack of clothes put into my arms. I looked up at Melissa before sighing and walking back into the bathroom. The clothes she gave me were a pair of black joggers, a maroon sweatshirt which smelled like cologne (I assumed it was her sons), and a pair of black toms. Once I got dressed I noticed that I still had the leather cord pearl necklace my mother gave me on my 14th birthday. I smiled at the memory then walked out of the bathroom. My hair was in a bun because it looked so messy. I then asked Melissa something that'd been bugging me.
"Hey M-Melissa umm what do I-I call you and y-your son when its final?"
She seemed to think it over in her head before she spoke again.
"Well you can call me whatever you want sweetie and you can call Scott whatever. He's just happy he's getting a sister."
She chuckled lightly at a memory before I asked quietly,
"Could you tell me about S-Scott?"
She nodded and we both sat on the bed again.
"Scott is my 16 year old son. He's tall with tan skin like me and chocolate brown hair that sort of looks like a mushroom top. His jaw is also crooked even though I have no idea why. He has asthma too. He's a really sweet boy, he's gentle and loves lacrosse. He's trying for first line this year too. Now his best friend Stiles is always over. It's like they're brothers almost, they're always together. Stiles though is very energetic and spunky. Those two boys really are something else. Stiles is also the Sheriffs son and has made it a point that you'll be just as much his sister as you'll be Scott's. Oh and they both will be at the house tomorrow morning to meet you. "
When Melissa finished I smiled but still felt an overwhelming amount of anxiety since they both are boys. For the rest of the day I stayed in my room and watched tv while Melissa helped other patients. It was nice to have someone that I trust with me. Yet around 9 o'clock Melissa came back to say she was at the end of her shift and would come get me tomorrow morning. I smiled and closed my eyes saying goodnight and started to drift off but not before feeling a kiss on my forehead. And with that I fell asleep with a smile laying gently on my lips.
