Chapter song: "Flawless" The Neighborhood
•••She enjoyed the brisk morning air on the walk to school. Samantha had only stayed with Jughead for a short while after arriving at the high school, because she knew her father was expecting her attendance record to improve significantly, but in those twenty minutes, she genuinely smiled for the first time in weeks without even thinking. He was surprising to say the least. Beneath that moody exterior and sarcastic attitude, Jughead Jones was genuinely nice. They walked mostly in silence listening to cars pass and birds sing to the sun, until the comfortable silence was broken by Jughead himself while asking her to properly introduce herself. He asked for details- favorite color, yellow, favorite hobbies, photography and poetry, favorite subject, English. She, being courteous he thought, asked the same questions in return, grey, writing, and English. But she genuinely wanted to know, she wanted to know everything about the beautiful boy walking along side her.
Upon discovering the two had common interests, it only made them feel as if a friendship could really blossom between the two. Once arrived at school, the two stopped at each others lockers to pick up the necessities each needed to get through the day of learning. They spent a total of approximately five minutes completely immersed in a riveting conversation about Pop's burgers. They babbled and rambled nonsense like they have been friends for years. They were comfortable around each other and didn't feel the need to put up a fake front around one another. That was rare for the two, people haven't been able to get past the walls they each built oh so high around themselves. Once the warning bell rang, stopping Samantha mid sentence, the two said goodbye and parted ways with the words, "I'll see you in English," from Jughead and a smirk in return from Samantha.
The day was boring, Samantha did her normal routine. Nothing special except when fourth period English rolled around, a partner project was assigned. Samantha never had trouble finding a partner for projects, everyone around her was drawn to her light. People just wanted a chance to spend time with Samantha Cross. The girl who seems like she has everything together and is always bubbly, but they don't know what is going on behind her mask of happiness. Her mind swirling with depression, but she's learned to block out the taunting thoughts. She has too, nobody could see the real hurt she has been in for so long. Her pride won't let them, so she has the mask. The mask is her saving grace, everybody thinks she's okay, great even.
Two classmates asked to be her partner before she turned and looked to the boy sitting across the room. She politely declined their offers and quickly slid out of the small blue chair she was assigned and made her way to Jughead.
Crouching in front of his small wooden desk, she greets him. "Hey there broody."
"Hello sunshine." He replies with a small smirk at the corner of his lips.
"Be my partner? Unless you have one already, but I didn't see you jump to socialize with anyone yet." Samantha says with a tilt of her head.
"Sure. I guess I could grace you with my presence, sunshine." Jughead replies while looking down at the girl he's already come to adore.
"Great. And 'Sunshine', huh?"
"It suits you, you radiate it."
"If I didn't know better broody, I'd say you're flirting with me." She states while raising a teasing eyebrow.
"You wish, sunshine." He hummed mimicking her eyebrow.
"Of course I do have you seen your jawline? It's pretty great." She says with complete seriousness but can't wipe the smile from her face.
Rolling his eyes trying to change the subject so the small blonde can't see the effect she has on him, he replies, "I take pride in my jawline, thank you. And give me your number."
"Flirty and demanding? Wow broody, you move quick."
"For the project, I need your number to get in touch for the project if we are going to be partners."

The final bell rang releasing the teenagers from school about three hours after the conversation Samantha and Jughead had in English. The rest of the day was uneventful for Samantha, but that's only because she was distracted by the swirly white clouds outside that she could admire from the classes she had, rather than paying attention.
Having spent her hours gazing at the clouds, she felt like she was one. At peace, weightless, free. She felt as if she was just floating and drifting in the wind on a new adventure. No set path, just trusting the elements to take her where she needs to be. Longing to feel that again, Samantha changes her course to the football field. There's a small secluded area about fifty feet right of the football field that is covered in overgrown grass next to a small caged in area that holds extra maintenance supplies. Samantha ungracefully plops down in the grass and lays back. Just looking up to the skies that stretch, bursting with ribbons of clouds bathed in a kaleidoscope of colors, she felt so serene.
The faint sound of football tryouts were heard in the background, but it didn't bother Samantha, she actually was amused by the thoughts of said boys having to do physical activity, having to run. She wondered why they were so adamant about getting on the football team. Why would they want to relentlessly chase down a ball? Why would they want to voluntarily run? Idiots.
Sighing she turns her head to look at the football field. She can see the figures of sophomore boys running around on the field, she looks to the bleachers and sees a number of teenagers sitting on the bleachers. Some were supporting their friends whom were trying out, some were stragglers whose rides were late to pick them up, and some were teenage girls blatantly gawking at the boys who are trying out. She rolls her eyes and looks to the track surrounding the football field. There she sees a small number of people chatting and walking around the track in pure boredom, a few were jogging, and then she sees a pair of girls in cheerleading uniforms.
Veronica Lodge and Betty Cooper.
Samantha has seen the two of them around school and town before, but was not friends with them. She has yet to meet the new girl Veronica Lodge, but has had a few conversations with the Cooper girl. She was sweet. The only communication the two shared were a few meaningless conversations in the halls and Samantha having to go to the Cooper household for a group project. Alice Cooper was a bitch.
Looking back to the clouds she can hardly stay awake. This exhaustion pulls her in, a slow and peaceful descent into a type of calm oblivion. I'll just rest my eyes, she tells herself. Eventually she falls into a light slumber, right there at school.
