"Wake up, my pet. It's morning."
Akeela tried to open her eyes, but they wouldn't budge.
"Akeela," the voice said gently. "Open your eyes."
"Mistress," Akeela managed to croak when she recognized Raina's voice. She willed her eyes to open and they did, albeit slowly.
"Good morning mistress," she whispered as she tried to focus on one of the Raina's she saw leaning above her.
"About time," someone snarled. "You should punish her for taking this long to wake."
"I think she's been punished enough, Dahlia," Raina snapped.
Dahlia and Kayla were kneeling around her and from Kayla's worried expression, she knew they had been trying to wake her for quite a while.
"I'm so s-sorry about Mistress Berdine," Akeela apologized tearfully. "I never meant to hurt her or you; never you Mistress. Please forgive me. You'll forgive me won't you Mistress?"
"Sh. sh. sh. Enough of this," Raina chided. "I thought I told you never to grovel. No matter the pain you are in, you must never grovel."
Akeela noticed that Mistress Raina had not said anything about forgiven her.
"But M-,"
"Are you well?" Raina asked. "Can you sit up?"
"I-I think so," Akeela stammered.
Akeela sat up and immediately regretted doing so. All the pain that had been numbed overnight slammed into her at once. She let out a choke gasp and fell to her side. There she lay as the room spun around her, her gut threatening to give up all the food she had not eaten.
"Akeela!" Kayla gasped, rushing to Akeela's side but before she could take two steps, Dahlia grabbed hold of her red hair, pulled her back and thrust the Agiel into her side.
"A Mord-Sith does not show compassion," Dahlia sneered. "How many times must I beat that into you?"
"Mistress R-Raina is a Mord-Sith, but she is showing compassion," Kayla seethed in pain.
"She is being gentle with her pet. This is not the same as compassion. A gentle hand is necessary to keep the Seer alive," Dahlia retorted, though even she did not sound so sure.
She let go of Kayla and the latter fell to her knees, silently clenching her teeth.
"Her name is Akeela," Kayla muttered.
"Do not talk back to me!" Dahlia shouted, kicking Kayla in the face, the blow knocking her to the ground.
"Yes, Mistress Dahlia," Kayla grunted, pulling herself up and wiping the blood that run down her chin.
Akeela tried sitting up again after the nausea ebbed. The pain was better now that she was braced for it, but it had not subsided.
"Come now, Seer," Dahlia said impatiently, "We've got to get you cleaned up. Lord Rahl's orders."
She rose and walked out of the room, but stopped when she got to the door as if suddenly remembering something she'd forgotten.
"You too Kayla," Dahlia said, nodding at the red-haired girl. "Get up and follow me."
