AUTHOR'S NOTE:
So soon I have to go to school and I am sooooo heartbroken! I really despise school but alas that is my fate. Again I'm gonna try as much as possible to update, but I'm not making any promises. Thank you guys soooo much for your support; this much appreciated. Farewell; see you in May- maybe even before, if I am free during Easter.“Hey, how old are you, Seer?” Kayla whispered, her voice low from exhaustion.
“Thirteen. How old are you?”
“Sixteen.”
“Oh,” Akeela said. “I’ve always wondered; what did you do to end up here? I thought you were already broken?”
“I am actually,” Kayla sighed. “Fully-fledged Mord-Sith- or so I thought. Mistress Dahlia says I’m a disgrace to all Mord-Sith.”
“That’s not true,” Akeela protested. “I think you’re pretty nice.”
“Exactly. I’m nice. Mord-Sith aren’t supposed to be nice,” Kayla said. “We’re supposed to be ruthless and pitiless to the enemies of Lord Rahl. You remember the old man you saw me with earlier the day we met?”
“Yeah?”
“His name is Francis,” Kayla said in a voice devoid of emotion. “I never meant to capture him. I’d just completed my training and I was still trying to come to terms with the fact that I’d just tortured and killed my own father when Mistress Dahlia sent me out on a scouting mission with Mistress Berdine and Mistress Hally.”
Akeela only referred to Raina as mistress, but she had quickly found out that Kayla referred to all her superiors by that title.
“It wasn’t supposed to be anything hard; we didn’t even expect to meet any enemies. I was scouting ahead of Mistress Berdine and Mistress Hally when I spotted Francis and his granddaughter walking down the forest path and I knew I had to warn them; I didn’t want the little girl to end up like me. When I approached, Francis recognized my brown leather and screamed at the girl to run,” Kayla stopped here and sucked in a deep breath.
“That was when I knew Francis had no chance of escaping; I was sure that Mistress Berdine and Mistress Hally had both heard the scream. I waited until the girl was out of sight before taking out my Agiels; I wanted to kill Francis because I knew that once Mistress Berdine and Mistress Hally caught up with us, they would torture Francis until he told them about the girl. I had taken just one step forward when he used his magic on me.
“That was a very stupid thing to do,” Kayla scoffed, bitterly.
“If he had just let me kill him; he’d have been free but being the sorcerer he was, he just had to try and hex me. Naturally, I defended myself like I was taught, capturing his magic and making it mine and when I saw what the magic did to him- what I did to him-; the pain it caused leaving him groaning and writhing on the ground, I instantly felt pity for him; I wanted to end his pain. I had just moved in for the kill when Berdine and Hally stopped me on the grounds that the Lord Rahl had use for sorcerers like Francis.”
