I made my way to the common rooms once my classes had ended for the day. I had worked it out so that my free period came last so that I end early on Fridays and mondays. Giving me more time to sleep before I'd have to begin my duties as head girl at least two days a week before I'd have to be answering questions, helping with homework and the like. I set down my books in my dorm room and went to the common room to get a pencil where Sam was walking in.

"Free period?" I asked him. He nodded.

"Thank god we get to decide our own schedules." He said. I laughed.

"Preach." I said "Unfortunately Professor Granger quite enjoys giving homework the first day of school so I shall not be sleeping as planned but doing work." I sighed.

"Have you had slughorn yet?" He scoffed.

"Yes, he hasn't given me anything, only Granger blessed us. But that is probably because he likes my class more." I smiled proudly

"Well you're in advanced potions." He scoffed. I shrugged.

"It's not hard. You gotta try different ways of doing things or it won't work." I said. "Alright I'm gonna go do homework." I sighed. He nodded as I walked back to my room and began on the homework Granger had assigned.

It wasn't long before everyone came into the common room and there was a bunch of chatter going around. I rolled my eyes, finishing the last bit of defense against the dark arts before going into the common room which was a hub for activity. I saw Wendy and Teddy walk in slowly.

"We have detention until we finish the essay. But we can only work on it during detention." Teddy said, biting her lip. They looked like life itself had just beat them with a stick. I shook my head.

"Do your other work." I told them patting them on the back. Sam was already in his duties helping the second years who kept looking more and more confused so I walked over and saved him. Or rather the second years who gained nothing from listening to him.

It was a good 4 hours of homework before dinner began. I ran out of that room so fast, with the book that granger had assigned us to read. But of course to my dismay Amelia was on the stairs with the ferret Veronica. I walked down behind them to the great hall. They stopped at the end of the stairs and were talking so I walked toward the great hall. Amelia stuck her foot out and I wasn't paying attention, so of course I fell flat on my face with her giggling. I groaned and really wanted to kick her ass. I heard her heels clicking away before I could get up and beat her.

"Need help?" A gentle voice asked. I looked up to see a hand extended to me. I took it and saw Scorpius Malfoy.

"Thank you." I said dusting myself off. He nodded.

"Well I see a gorgeous lady like yourself fall and I would be remiss as to not help her." He smiled. I laughed and blushed a little bit. Scorpius had been the shy type for a long while. Staying reserved but this year you could tell that he was walking taller. I never spoke to him. He had been in a couple of my classes in the past few years but he was a slytherin and Wendy and Teddy find me even talking to a slytherin. They'll lecture me till my ears bleed. He picked up my book. "Granger?" He asked me to look at the book, I nodded.

"Who else." I laughed. He laughed with me, his green eyes gleaming as he looked at me.

"We've never been formally introduced, I believe." He smiled. "Scorpius Malfoy." He said, extending his hand.

"Ryder Cambridge." I said, shaking the hand he had put out and gave a small smile. He handed me back my book.

"Nice to meet you." He nodded a smile dancing on his lips. I smiled.

"And you." I laughed as he handed me the book. "Thank you." I said walking into the great hall smiling at him one last time.

"No problem." He smirked walking with me but parting ways once we stepped inside. I went and sat down where I usually sit, Daniel had gotten there first.

"Were you just talking to Malfoy." He asked, his eyebrow raised.

"He helped me up after the pair of ferrets Amelia and Veronica thought it a good idea to trip me." I scoffed. "I understand that as gryffindors we have some sort of predetermined hatred for slytherins but that does not mean that I can't talk to one. He's also the only one in the whole bunch who isn't an asshole." Daniel scoffed at me.

"He's got 2 strikes against him. He's a Malfoy and a slytherin that's no bueno." Daniel scoffed counting it all out on his fingers.

"Oh shut up." I said as the rest of them filled in.

"About what?" Wendy asked. I looked at Daniel and shook my head.

"Ryder talked to a slytherin. A whole conversation." He said. I rolled my eyes.

"You're kidding." Teddy scoffed.

"We can not engage them Ryder." Sam scoffed. I rolled my eyes.

"They're just people." I exclaimed.

"They're slytherin, they do not count." Sam scoffed. Headmaster McGonogall stepped up to the podium hands folded.

"Evening children!" She smiled. "I trust you all had a good day. I had nothing but good reports from your teachers. For that every house will be receiving 30 points. A nice start to the school year. Now I do not wish to be seeing bad behavior outside of the classroom. Harmful to your peers. For that I had considered taking 10 points from slytherin. However I decided that Amelia and Veronica's lessons are to be learned in the forbidden forest. Now let's eat! See me after" She said to the 2 of them.

"I wonder what the hell they did." Sam laughed.

"They tripped me and Scorpius helped me up." I snapped. "Not that you cared to ask why I spoke to him." I growled.

"Seriously they tripped you." Teddy exclaimed "Oh I'm gonna kill them."

I rolled my eyes so far back into my head I could see my own brian.

"Would you stop!" I exclaimed. "They're in another house so what." I growled "Scorpius helped me up. But instead of asking oh ryder are you okay. You immediately focus on how to hurt them. Explain to me how that makes us better than them." They went silent and I raised my eyebrow to provoke a response.

"This chickens good..." Wendy said quietly.

"Mhm." Sam nodded.

We ate the rest of dinner with short and sparse conversations. I finished early and went to bed earlier so that I could get up on time to greet the Americans. I was going to tell them about it. But then they began to act like assholes and I didn't feel they needed to know.
