CHAPTER ELEVEN

The next morning I woke up in Nick’s arms. I got out of his grip, and went into the bathroom. I showered and dressed in a jogging suit. My phone vibrated, revealing an unknown number.

“Hello?” I answered. “Hello is this Maya Streeter?” a feminine voice said. “Yes,” I dragged out. “Yes, this is the staff of Erlanger hospital and I was authorized to call you to inform you that your mother and brother will be released soon,” a staff said. “Okay, how are they?” I asked. “They’re wonderful. The officers found the men who did all of this, and now they are behind bars,” the staff said. I sighed in relief. “Okay, when are they going to be released?” I asked. “In two days,” the staff replied. “Okay thank you,” I hung up. I felt arms wrap my waist, turning me around. It was Nick, of course.

“Who was that on the phone?” he asked, pecking my neck. “The nurses from Erlanger telling me that my mother and brother are being released in two days,” I replied. “Oh okay. I’ll go get them if you want me to,” he said. “In two days,” I pecked his cheek. He chuckled. “Okay naughty girl,” he picked me up by hips, holding me against the wall. I giggled, rubbing his neck. “I don’t know how many times I’ll tell you that I love but I really love you girl,” he said. “I love you too. But, I want some waffle house, so go buy me some,” I demanded. “Anything for you ma,” he gently put me down, grabbing his keys. “I know what you want too.”

He left the house, and I sat on the living room couch. I scrolled through the TV until my phone rang again. “Hello?” I answered, irritated. “May I speak to Maya?” a male asked. “This is she,” I grumbled. “Oh uh, hey Maya, this is Myron, your father,” the male said. It felt as if the world crashed down on me, and everything was spinning. My eyes and nose began to sting as I began to speak again.

“My who?” I repeated. “Your father, Myron, Maya I’m so sorry that I haven’t been in your life in eleven years but it’s a very long story~” I cut him off. “After eleven long years, why do you decide to call now?” I grimly said. “You haven’t given a damn about me since you caught mom cheating on you.”

That was my big issue with my mother that I never mentioned. She was the reason my biological dad left the family. Niko and I had the same father, but for some reason she just wasn’t happy with the family we had. I was six years old, and Niko was seven years old when our father left us. He left because the three of us walked in on mom cheating on dad with Marcus. She had no respect for herself then, and I blamed her for our father leaving. To find some relief from that pain, I gathered my best friend Bahja and we started hustling. No one was bringing as much income as we would bring into our households. That’s why I looked at hustling as the only way of survival.

“Maya, you know what happened between your mother and I. There would be times I tried to come and get you and Niko, but that damn Sharon, your mother, wouldn’t let me near y’all. Sweetheart, I promise I didn’t mean for everything to be this way, I promise you that,” my dad stressed. “Dad,” I cried. “You have no idea what I went through when you weren’t there with us.”

“What happened?” he asked. “That bastard Marcus would rape me every chance he got, and mom didn’t care,” I sobbed. I could hear his breathing become rougher as if he were crying. “Damn sweetie, I swear I didn’t mean for everything to happen the way it did. Damn man,” he cried, sniffling. “When can I see you?” I asked. “You feel like meeting somewhere?” he asked, gathering himself. I sniffled. “Uh, what about Panera, you know where that’s at?” I asked. “Yeah, I’ll meet you at four,” he said. “Okay dad,” I said. “I love you sweetheart,” he said. “Love you too dad,” I slowly hung up.

That’s when Nick barged into the door with a Waffle House bag.

“Well, hello there,” I smirked. “Aye, why you crying ma?” he asked, sitting next to me. I shook my head. “Just talked to my dad,” I said. “Your real pops?” he asked. I nodded. “You know, Nick? I had no kind of guidance from my own damn mother. She had no respect for herself back eleven years ago. We were all a happy family: my father, Niko, her and I. She fucked that up when she got caught fucking Marcus by me, my dad and Niko. I’ve hated her for making my dad leave us,” I shook my head, crying. “Babe,” Nick pulled me into him. “It’s okay ma. You have a lot of respect for yourself, and I love you for that. Don’t you forget that.”
