I was running, running through hallway after hallway, to try to find my friends. My brain was thinking a thousand different thoughts, so I didn't realize that I had just ran straight into Henry and Sebastian. "Guys! Thank the Angel that you're both okay!" Sebastian smirked slightly, "We're big boys Kai, we won't go down easy." Our small reunion was interrupted when three of Valentine's goons caught sight of us. Sebastian grabbed me by the arm and ran in the opposite direction as them. I yelped when one of the goons grabbed the back of my shirt, forcing me to let go of Sebastian, "Seb! Henry!" The last thing I remember before blacking out was seeing Henry shoot out a ball of pure light, the flames of the fire residing within me burst from my palms and burn the hand of the goon holding me, Sebastian creating a portal, and both of the boys shoving me through it.

I was thrown out of my thoughts when Jace snapped in front of my face, "Kai? Still with us?" I jolted back to my senses and nodded as a result. When my eyes refocused, I saw Simon as still trying to convince Clary to go with him, "We gotta go." Clary shook her head as she looked back at Jace and I, "Simon, I think Jace and Kai can help us." Simon's facial expression was priceless, "What?" Clary grabbed Simon by the arm and started walking towards the Institute, "Come on." Simon mumbled, "How do we know these Mick Jagger-looking guys are even gonna try-" I growled impatiently as I followed Jace up the stairs to the Institute, "Mundane, we do not have the time." Clary nodded, "Come on, Simon. Let's go." Once we entered the Institute, I realized the mundane couldn't see what we were seeing, so I nudged Jace as a cue for him to draw a rune to allow Simon to see the Institute. Simon gulped once he saw what Jace was doing, and Clary squeezed his hand in reassurance, "I know. Trust me." Simon squeaked out, "He's, like, burning himself." Then, Jace grabbed Simon's hand which set the mundane's comfort level through the roof, "Buddy, what's going on, man? I'm not your type, man. I don't even-"

I smirked once Simon saw the Institute as we saw it, "Where are we? What the hell? Clary, is there a war going on that I don't know about?" Jace nodded as he let go of Simon's hand, "There is now." Clary nodded, "I think my mother's at the center of it." Once Clary and Jace started to walk away, I looked over my shoulder to see Simon still standing there in shock, "You coming?" Simon regained his composure and nodded, "Yeah." The mundane then started to follow closely behind me muttering, "What is this place? There's a lot of gear in here. What'd they do, rob a tech shop? So these cold-blooded killers are gonna help us?" Clary rolled her eyes slightly, "They're not killers. They're protecting us." Jace smirked as he looked at Clary, "Specifically, you."

I shrugged as I looked over at Simon, "It's sort of our thing." Simon's eyes widened slightly, "Your thing? You guys have a thing?" Clary shook her head as she moved a step closer to Simon, "He means a Shadowhunter thing. That's what they do, protecting humans from demons." Simon rolled his eyes and said the first correct thing he's said the entire evening, "Demons, right. That makes perfect sense, 'cause there are demons running all around New York." I beat Jace to the snarky comment that I knew we were both thinking, "That is the first correct thing you've said all day." I looked over at the monitors that Jace was looking over and I muttered, "NYPD." Simon gulped, "Won't they find us?" Jace shook his head, "No. Our wards will deter them." Simon arched an eyebrow at Jace, "Police?" He nodded, "And the NYPD will do their typical mundie thing for a few hours and then the area will be clear."

I groaned once I heard the tell tale voice of Alec Lightwood tumbling down the hall towards us, "What is going on? Why is there a mundane in the Institute?" I took the liberty of explaining to Alec our situation, "A Circle member followed him to get to Clary." Clary nodded, "A Circle rune, just like the guys that took my mother." Simon's face got more and more confused the more we explained to Alec, "What exactly is a Circle member and why are they trying to kill us?" Alec mentally groaned, "All we know is a long time ago the Circle led a revolt." Jace nodded, "A lot of Shadowhunters got killed including my father." I finished off with, "And since the revolt we've been forbidden to even hear about the Circle." Clary looked over at me once I finished, "But, how is that even possible? It's your history." I raised an eyebrow, "Says the girl who didn't know she was a Shadowhunter?" Clary nodded, "Yeah. Yeah, you're right. And now the only person who knows the truth is missing, so I don't care about your rules or what's forbidden, I'm There's got to be someone out there who can tell us - why they've taken my mother." Jace looked over at Alec, and then nodded, "There is. You coming?" Clary got the cue and started to follow Jace, "Yeah." Once Simon started to follow Clary, though, Jace stopped him right in his tracks, "No, no, no. Not you." Clary gestured to Simon as she protested, "Hey, we're a package deal." Simon nodded in agreement, "Yeah." I could see that this conversation was getting Jace nowhere, so I intervened, "There are runes all over the training room floor that would kill your mundie boyfriend." Clary and Simon shook their heads, "He's not my-" "I'm not, like... We're, uh, just friends."
