The weather here is awfully cold, especially for the middle of September. I shivered as I tugged my thin jacket tighter around myself, the strap of my book bag slid off my shoulder into the crease between my bicep and forearm as I did so. Frustrated I yanked it back in place; a puff of vapor escaped my lips through the clouded breaths I took in the frigid cold. My parents hadn't enlightened me with the fact that winter has arrived with brutal force here in Dallas, Texas-in fact my parents haven't spoken to me much since my arrival. My father just told me to be hastening when unpacking my things in my new room, then my mother had approached me before I set off to bed, a somber expression invading her beautiful face.
"Here, this is your schedule for tomorrow along with a map of the school so you don't get lost." She reluctantly took a step forward to hand over a packet of papers, which were folded neatly in half. Her fingers gripped the corners almost seeming afraid to accidently touch me, yes, I could see it clearly-through her eyes now she watched me cautiously as if I were a venomous rattler, coiled and ready to strike. For some odd reason it didn't bother me, alone as I felt, the cold shoulder they exposed to me no longer held the same affect it would have had a week ago. Swiftly I took the papers, ambling over to my back pack so I could tuck it in an empty folder.
"Thanks" I mumbled under my breath.
"Sure, uh and here this is yours as well."
I turned to see that she extended her hand towards me again, more abruptly this time. In her palm she balanced a small laptop, small enough to be the same size as my notebook. I frowned at it, "What's the laptop for?"
Her answer was curt, "At this school the students do not carry text books, so every student is required to purchase a laptop that is provided by the school."
"Oh," was all I was able to respond,
"Of course there is still a payment that has to be given for it-just in case it breaks or other reasons-45 dollars, not much."
"Ok then, well thanks..." Her lips tightened at my monotone words, taking back her step once I had the laptop in my hands, its charger folded sprucely on top. Well what did she expect me to do? Jump up and down like a preppy rich girl that just received a shiny new Mercedes for her birthday? Hell no.
"Alright. Well I suppose that is all, your bus is going to get here at seven-thirty in the morning. It picks you up at the gates of the apartments."
That got my attention, "Seven-thirty? At the front gates?! That's like forever away!" I flinched at my own words, realizing how callow I sounded. Now I did sound like a snobby preppy girl. Ew.
"Well then you'll just have to endure it and wake up earlier so you could get there on time."
I pressed my lips; our apartment building was all the way at the back of the enclosure, making it one of the last. This was a rather large apartment complex, so it took approximately five minutes to walk from my apartment to the front gates.
