It was an exceptionally good day at the Lupin household. Lyall Lupin sat in the rocking chair, sipping his tea, when the brown barn owl landed on the window beside him.
"Honey, is it the Prophet?" His wife, Hope, asked from the kitchen.
"It's the letter!! Its the Hogwarts letter!" A lean blond boy came running to him, clutching the mail the owl just delivered. He danced around the room, happiness clear on his scarred face.
"Pa, when are we going to get the books? It says the term starts on September first!" Remus Lupin, asked. His excitement was barely contained, seeing now he will meet other people his age and go to a real school.
Lyall smiled, seeing bliss take up his son's innocent face. It was not everyday that he saw Remus so happy. Afterall, he was the one who ruined his son's pristine childhood.
It was because of Lyall's job that Remus had to suffer incurable pain all throughout his past and will have to tolerate it for all of his life.
Lyall worked at the Ministry of Magic in the department of magical law enforcement and was doing very well as the Sr. Secretary of the head of the department. But it was during the month of January one year, that Lyall published a pamphlet on werewolves. The contents of that pamphlet are and will always be his greatest regret, because it angered that head of the werewolf clan Fenrir Greyback. The pamphlet discussed about the disgusting disease that was lycanthropy and it said that Lupin believed that all lycanthropes deserve nothing but death. He was young at the time. Young and naïve, and he did not realise what great enemies he was making.
Lyall's opinion cost the Lupin family dearly, as Greyback decided to revenge himself upon Lyall by targeting his son. On the night of 27 February, 1965, as the nearly five-year-old Remus slept peacefully in his bed, outside the forest quavered under the ear piercing howls of Greyback.
Greyback tore open the wall of the Lupin house, and attacked the peacefully sleeping Remus, leaving him with a nasty scar and a disease that would haunt him for his entire life. Though Lyall was able to get there in time to drive Greyback off with powerful spells, he was unable to prevent him from completing his evil goal. Remus became infected with lycanthropy and he became a werewolf himself.
His parents took him to various healers and tried their best to make him a normal boy, but there was no cure for his condition.
On the next full moon, Remus experienced the most painful night of his life. He had never felt so unnerving before. It was like his veins was on fire. He had screamed and clawed his skin, finding a way, anyway, to stop it. Remus turned into a little ball of fir that night, silently crying and willing the pain to go away. And then it had ended. Yet it was not the end.
Lyall put many powerful spells to keep Remus inside during his transformations. His sounds even though were muffled, could scare any passing villager. The villagers heard the noise and the screaming and thought they were hearing particularly violent spirits.
But today, Remus Lupin's happindess knew no bounds. Today, everything changed. And now, Lupin cant wait for the first of september to arrive.
Since he was five he had always been alone, unable to go out or talk to anyone but his parents. Whenever he asked his parents, why not, he would get the same answer, "They will know you are not like them, Remus dear. Its for your own good."
But Remus would console himself, bearing the fact, that maybe parents are right. He was different and he has always has been since he was five.
Remus' father never told him who did this to him, but he knew why that werewolf did attack him.
"I brought this upon you. Its all my fault that you have to go through this, my son." His father would say.But now, he was okay. He knew the drill. He knew what was to be done on the full moon night. He would obediently go to the basement and shackle himself up. He would wait for the moon and try not to shriek and scream.
He had heard of Hogwarts for his whole life. Since he was a toddler, his father would tell him how he admired his school and how he wished to send Remus there too. But this was before he was bit. After his transformation, Remus' father did talk about Hogwarts, but not that he would send Remus there too.
And then came Dumbledore on his front steps. His father was scared that Dumbledore might have come here for taking Lupin to St. Mungos, so after ten minutes of keeping him shut out of the house, when Lupins father came inside, he saw Dumbledore playing with Remus by the fireplace.
Dumbledore had explained his father that Remus will be taken care of with utmost sincerity by him and no harm will come to him in Hogwarts. His father did need some convincing but in the last, he agreed. And that has been it. Since then his father was sure, that no matter what, Dumbledore would never get Remus hurt.
Now with his acceptance letter in hand, Remus felt his dreams come true. Lyall saw his exceptionally inteligent child growing up to become something great. And Hope Lupin saw her family becoming the happy one it used to be.
So now almost three week away from boarding the train that will take him to Hogwarts, the place of his dreams, Remus lay awake, thinking how would he ever thank Dumbledore enough. But what worried him was, whether anyone who once realised what he really was, be friends with him. Because he didnt want to be alone all over again. He pushed the negative thoughts aside and began doodling, for the ten thousandth time, in which house he will be sorted into.
