The first day at Hogwarts was about to end and till then, Lily had not once approached Severus. But as much as this fact hurt, it hurt more to see her walking to the classes with James Potter and Sirius Black.
Sirius Black. That boy was in serious trouble. He had seen how angry Narcissa, their prefect, was and how many cuss words were shouted into the common room by a fifth year called Bellatrix because of Sirius Black's sorting. Severus know knew they were Sirius's cousin. And he was not happy by the fact that this relation made Sirius Black his cousin too.
Immediately after the sorting, Lucius Malfoy, another prefect, had written to Orion Black, informing him of his son's departure into Gryffindor. Lucius had said that the matter was crucially important as it was a dishonour to the house of Slytherin that a pure-blood Black was sorted into a house had filthy as Gryffindor.
Soon Orion Black would be here dragging Sirius along with him and one problem in Severus life would be gone. Next, he would just have to eradicate James Potter and then Lily and he would lead a blissful life here at Hogwarts for the next seven years.
Severus missed Lily more than he dared to confess. Afterall, Lily had been his only true friend all his life. Here, in the Slytherin common room, there are only pure-blood talks and how rich ones father is. And seeing as Severus has neither, he is often left alone to pace in the dormitory of the first years.
Along with him, Evan Rosier and Adrian Flint, were the only other first years boys. Ursula Flint, who was Adrian's twin sister, usually tagged along with them. But nevertheless, Severus couldn't push away the thought of what it would have been like, if Lily would be in the same house as his.
But then he had already debated that Lily was too good a person to be here in this wicked house. The Slytherins would crush her like a little cockroach what with her being a mudblood.
And then there was the bright golden and maroon Gryffindor, which Severus though was full of showy and arrogant assholes like Sirius Black and James Potter.
So the only way left for Severus to make sure that Lily won't forget him with time and make new friends would be to keep in touch with her no matter what.
"Who are you staring at? Look people, teeny Severus already had found himself a girl!" Rabastan Lestrange, a third year squeaked in fake delight, as several other around them started laughing.
"Who were you staring at mate, like seriously?" Evan Rosier asked after the seniors had presumed their taste of eating.
"None of your business." Severus spat back at him.
After the dinner, Severus spent an hour trying to decide what to write in his letter to his mother. He didn't want to show her how lonely he was here, or she will think he was unhappy and be sad herself. Neither did he know whether he should tell her about how delicious the food was here, when he knew she was possibly starving there.
At the end, he gave up and climbed into the bed, eager to wake up early tomorrow so as to go and talk with Lily before other Slytherins arrive and spot him trying to speak to a girl let alone a muggle born. He will be branded forever.
Six storeys up and on the other end of the castle, Lily lay awake in her four poster bed in her two-bedroom dormitory. Alice was asleep on the bed opposite her.
Lily had taken a liking to Alice almost instantly. She was so much like her, unaware of the wizarding world and her life spent in the muggle world with her muggle parents. Alice loved styling her hair into different braids and pretty buns. And now that she knew magic she used it to produce little flowers that went along with her braids. That was something Lily would surely like to learn.
But then again, a day without Severus wasn't as much fun as she had thought it would be. In their fantasies, they both were together. In same house. And here laid alone, not feeling entirely like herself, without her best friend. And then there were these buffoons, James Potter and Sirius Black. She had disliked them since the moment they opened their egoistic mouths on the express.
Remus Lupin however was an innocent and soft spoken guy and Lily wondered how will he ever be able to spend the next seven years locked into the same dorm as the other two.
All in all, Lily's day had been queer. It showed her many new possibilities of life, magic and such and it also showed her the contrast between the wizarding world and the world where she came from. And yet again she was afraid whether she would be able to fit in or not. But this time, Severus wasn't here to tell her that it will all be okay in the end.
