Chapter 6: A Beginning to what may be the end

Chloe and June ran through the streets and sidewalks of New Empire City, running their way to the abrupt end, taking their time to catch their breath as they walked into the vast forest outside.

The border between Delmarva and Keystone was a forest, one that stretched for a couple miles before opening into the first town on their route. They were careful not to get lost or take a wrong turn, but right now they ignored this, the adrenaline was rushing through them faster than their hearts could beat.

All the dreams that June had seen in the past week flooded her mind, all the times Jodie had screamed "Yass queen." At them had made her laugh. The time Kyle thought Connie was all a rumour, and of course the curiousity that led them here.

They treaded on through the woods, silence through them as they kept thinking of how they never told anyone, not even a note. Other than Connie, of course.

"June, turn off your phone." Chloe insisted as they walked on.
"Why?"
"They can track you, either leave it here or turn it off."
"What if we need to check the time?" June personally didnt want to turn off her phone, but she knew she would have to.
"I have a watch." Chloe pointed to her wrist.
"Fine." June sighed as she pulled out her phone, the time flicked 3:27 as she turned it off, brushing off the reoccurring time.

The two walked for two hours before reaching the end of the forest, the sight of the first town had made Chloe yell in happiness, jumping up and hugging June while laughing.
The sun had started to rise, and it was only about 5:45, the two started towards the burned town, buildings barely still up.
They took shelter from any search planes in a parking garage that had seemed to have stayed put even though the rest of the city was a mess.

"We made it!" Chloe exclaimed for a last time before sitting down on the ground with June, who had pulled out the map and crossed 'Clairville' off of the map.
"One down, eight more to go." June sighed, pulling out her water bottle and a granola bar, at least these were the kind with caffeine in them.
"Think we can make it to the next town by sundown?" Chloe pondered, taking a granola bar out of the bag.
"Maybe if we can find a car." June said, looking around the parking garage, curious if there was a car left behind.
"Lets look." Chloe said as she rolled up the map again, putting her wrapper in the bag along with the water bottle and map.
The two got up and made their way to the way downward, the garage went underground instead of above ground, slightly making Chloe nervous.

The two looked at the second floor, no car.
The third floor held what they were looking for, a car. A few, actually.
"Theres a fifty-fifty chance at one working, so which one?" June asked as she took a look at the two cars.
"This one seems good." Chloe pointed to a white van, an old print of the name was barely visible on the side.

Just as Chloe tried to open the passenger door, June broke the window to the driver's seat in and unlocked the car, hoping in and unlocking the door on the other side.
"What about keys?" Chloe said as she got in.
"We can hotwire it, theres more gas in this one than the other, this one has three quarters of a tank left." June said as she busted the plastic on the steering column, stripping two wires and connecting them until the car started.

June took the car out of park and into reverse, luckily she has her learners permit.
"Tell me, where did you learn how to hotwire a car?" Chloe asked as her friend pulled the car out of the parking garage.
"I have one friend and a brother who specializes in diesel tech, I know a bit about cars." June stated as she drove down the street.
Chloe climbed into the back of the van, taking some of the plastic water bottles and shoving them into the bag.
June wasnt the best driver, and was glad the only person on the road was her. Her only downside was that this was a destroyed state.
The roads werent that good.
