A wind whistled through the streets of the city of Qweis. Winter has just begun, but it felt like summer, due to global warming and the like. News reporters talked about the record highs. It didn't surprise anyone. Missing posters were a common sight, some for Lab rejects that escaped, some for people that were most likely dead. Fresh food was a rare occurrence, so the packs of mutated animals mostly ate carrion.

Witchey didn't bother to clean her fur anymore. It was useless. The only thing she enjoyed was collecting, especially shiny things. This habit earned her more missing posters than usual. People's belongings were more likely to go missing when she was around.

Witchey started to run. Night was coming, and if she wasn't home by nightfall, she was dead. The most horrifying mutations came out at night. She ran down steps and up steps, down dark alleys and up streets, but she got nowhere.

The staircase seemed to be endless. It was pitch black. After a while, Witchey noticed a faint light up ahead. She ran faster. The ground finally leveled out, but she saw no exit. Instead, she found a necklace. Her mood lifted. It was beautiful, with intricate designs. It looked just like a snake's eye. The necklace must have created the light. She put it on, pleased that she had a new addition to her collection.

After a minute of searching, Witchey noticed another staircase, this time going up. She ran up it eagerly. It had to be an exit. She breathed in a deep breath of air.
