I check my phone to see what time it is, and am surprised when it reads 9:44 a.m.

Guess I'll be a little early for work, I thought to myself.

As I walk down the sidewalk, I take a deep breath, loving the salty smell the ocean gave the air. The beach was pretty empty this morning, which was a surprise since it was such a beautiful day.

I entered the back door of the boutique, and dropped off my purse in the back room. I grabbed my name tag, and adjusted it onto my shirt as I made my way out front.

"Oh hey, Jess! You're early this morning," my co-worker Morgan says as she finishes hanging up some shirts.

"Guess I woke up early," I laugh as I open the cash register.

We worked in silence for a few moments.

"So, Mrs. Banks stopped by," she said quietly after the long pause while looking at the shirt she was currently hanging up, obviously avoiding eye contact.

"What?" My eyes were wide as my head shot up.

"She was looking for you," she said almost in a whisper, trying to act as if she was really concentrated on what she was doing.

"When?" I said, still trying to decipher why she would come to my workplace.

"About a half hour ago," she said, finally raising her head to look at me.

"What did she say?"

"Just that she wanted to talk to you. It seemed serous."

Mrs. Banks was the mother of my ex-boyfriend, Jake. Jake died about 8 months ago, and I haven't really been the same since. He was stabbed, and it's still a huge investigation to this day. No one knows who did it. Even though he was hard to deal with at times, I really do miss him.

"Did she say what it was about?" I asked.

"No. Just promise me you'll talk to her later," she said, looking at me with hopeful eyes.

Now it was my turn to avoid eye contact. I stared down at the money in my hands, trying to act like I was too busy to answer her question.

"Think about it?" She said.

"Whatever."

The bell on the front door of the boutique rang, and I tried to stand on my toes to get a better view of who was entering.

To my surprise, it was a guy.

"Hey!" Morgan was enthused. "Can I help you?I bet you're shopping for your girlfriend. Do you need help picking something out?" She said with a big smile.

"Um, no actually. I'm just new here and lost. Mind helping with that instead?" He said with a smile.

I couldn't help but smile to myself. Morgan was the type of person who said things without thinking first, and she always ended up embarrassing herself.

"Oh, sure." She said as she laughed lightly.

Hearing Morgan trying to explain directions to this guy was painful to listen to; she was so nervous.

"You know what?" Morgan laughed nervously, taking a step away from him. "There's a map in the back, let me go get one for you," she walked away, letting out a sigh and giving me a look of horror on her way out.

I laughed lightly at her and how socially awkward she was..

I stood at the counter where the cash register was, folding some shorts.
