The footsteps kept running down the hall...
There was no way in hell that they were going down without a chase...
Suddenly they bumped into something and...
"Oww!!!" shouted Marina as she rubbed her forehead, which hit the tree in front of her, and groaned.
A few days have gone by since her brother had been poisoned by Voken and Voken had discovered their house in hiding.
So far Marina had been helping the family out by hunting for food with her best friend and Jerek cause today was the day that Marina would be teaching her 1st younger brother how to survive and hunt.
Usually it would go to Andon, who is the eldest, but since he is sick Marina is taking over of showing Jerek how to hunt.
"You know if you keep up that yelling, you could scare the whole forest that is crawling with the animals Marina," said a voice that brought her back into reality.
Marina turned with her arrow nocked into her bow and ready to fire until she saw Reina and Jerek standing a few feet away from her with amused expressions.
Marina lowered her bow and replied "Well I was chasing a deer, but that little thing can run fast, despite the fact that it has antlers."
Reina just rolled her eyes and said "That's what they all say before you realize that you have been chasing a squirrel."
Marina just frowned and said "Come on, lets find some more animals to hunt, we have to feed our family now before we have my father complaining from here till next Tuesday."
So they set off and headed down deeper into the forest of unknown territory that wasn't familiar with them.
But they had to keep moving unless they wanted to get to the Wings of Justice base in order to save her brother.
Marina spotted movement out of the corner of her right eye and saw a plump squirrel there chewing on a acorn.
She arched her bow and aimed her arrow at the squirrel who was to busy eating to notice them.
Then she let the arrow fly and the strike went true making another animal caught for dinner.
So far they had a total of four rabbits and two, now three, squirrels.
Smiling, Marina went over to the dead squirrel and took her arrow from the squirrel, picked up the squirrel, and set it in the bag that Jerek held in his hands that held the other animals that they have caught.
"Now you saw what I just did, right Jerek?" asked Marina.
Jerek nodded his head yes and replied "Yes I have seen that you were focused and calm."
Marina smiled and said "Well why don't you give it a shot with catching one animal for the family."
While she said that, she held out her prized bow and one arrow from her sheathed pack to Jerek.
Jerek's face lit up and he took both of them in one hand and said "I won't let you down!!"
Marina just giggled a little and replied "Don't worry if you don't get it the first time, why it took me nearly 4 tries just to get it right."
Jerek and Reina just laughed and soon Marina joined in with them.
With a pat on his back saying "Go on ahead we won't be far behind," the little 9 year old ran off into the forest leaving Marina with her best friend.
"Do you think that it will take him 20 tries before he can figure it out?" asked Reina.
"Reina you just doubt him for that, but I think that he will follow in his older brother's footsteps besides Mark," replied Marina.
"Speaking of which, shouldn't Mark be with us right now?" asked Reina.
Marina rolled her eyes and said "Why would he come when he's on his lazy rear end doing nothing that would even help the family. But I betcha that when I am through with him, he will beg mom and dad to give him a task."
Reina laughed at that one with her hands covering her mouth as to not scare the animals away.
Then suddenly they heard an arrow being shot and a scream.
Quickly Marina left the bag and ran toward where her brother left and found him lying in the ground with the bow in his right hand but the arrow wasn't there.
When she turned Jerek over she saw that the arrow was in his stomach and he was bleeding very heavily.
If she called for help it would be too late for he would already be dead by then.
A tear trickled down her cheek as she rasped "Jerek, are you okay?"
In reply her brother's eyes fluttered open.
Jerek smiled weakly and said "I didn't mean to, I ...."
In mid-sentence he was overcome by a bount of coughing.
When he cleared up he was heaving into gasps that were getting shallower and shallower.
"Marina he's dying," said Reina as she sat on Jerek's other side.
Marina set her determined face on and replied "He's not dying, not if I have anything to say about that."
She held her hand up straight the way her mother taught her to and concentrated on her powers and the hand glowed a brilliant silver.
Marina, with ease, set her hand down over the wound (after she had taken the arrow out) and concentrated on healing her brother.
Those stupid scientist took my best friend in the world, I will not let anyone take my family, thought Marina angrily.
There was a big flash of light and then it dimmed, half of it flowing into her hand and the other half flowing into her brother making him glow a white line around him and then it left.
Jerek coughed but this time only a couple of times and sat up with difficulty.
Marina and Reina helped him sit up and they all smiled.
~~~
Another person smiled to.
So, the girl has the power, thought the person We'll just wait and see how much power she has left to save her family, when we drain her of it.
Then the person melted back into the shadows and the shadows went to report to their master of what had happened and what they had seen.
