Seventeen months.

It had been seventeen months since Ethan last got to hold you. Since he had last kissed you, or told you he loved you.

Not like Ethan was counting, or anything. Definitely not counting.

In the days leading up to that fateful day, Ethan could sense it coming. You still loved Ethan, absolutely, but it wasn't like before. Something had changed inside both of you, and you two just weren't as compatible anymore. It hurt, but like you had told him, it was better for both of you to move on to others. Others that will make you happier.

He knew that on that day, seventeen months ago, when you had finally gotten it off your chest, one of his best friends had gone to comfort you. One of your best friends. Tyler Scheid.

You and Tyler were very kind to Ethan and all of the team when it happened, not shoving it the younger man's face when you started dating. You easily could have. In fact, you and Tyler had even consulted Ethan separately to get closure and approval from him before going on your first date. Ethan wanted you to be happy so bad, he said yes.

When it first happened, Mark and Amy and Kathryn had all comforted Ethan, assuring that he would find his happiness too.

It hurt when he would see that yours and Tyler's smiles were twice as wide as when you were dating the blue-haired boy. Ethan knew that he had hurt you, but he also knew that Tyler wouldn't love you the way he did. And maybe that's what you wanted.

Twenty months passed since the break-up, or dissipation, as Ethan liked to think of it as, and everything still reminded Ethan of you. He hid behind smiles that never reached his eyes, preferring to be in the corner of the room when you were with Tyler. He knew deep inside of him that he would only be happiest with you. But you were happier without him.

Twenty-nine months and the team dynamics were nearly back to normal, you were in love, and so was Ethan. He still had a pining for you, observing your interactions with Tyler closely. He saw the first signs of what happened between you two, years ago, the growing apart. And so Ethan waited, for when Tyler would hurt you, like lovers do. Because nobody hurt, or loved you, like Ethan did. He knew that you knew that.
