Michael wakes up when someone pokes his face. He rolls the other way hoping it was just his imagination but not even fifteen seconds later; his face is being poked again. He opens his eyes and is met face to face with his daughters smiling faces. "Happy Birthday dad!" The twins screech in unison. Shiloh reaches out and grabs Michael's hand, dragging him out of his warm bed.
"Come on dad we have a surprise!" His girls lead him out of his bedroom and towards the kitchen. He can smell pancakes and hears someone laughing, as they get closer. As he rounds the corner he see's his twin sister and her son, Jackson setting plates of pancakes on the table.
"Happy Birthday!" She screams. Michael runs over to his sister and wraps her up in his arms. Being twins, Michael and Charlotte have always been close and unlike all the other Clifford siblings that live in the states, Charlotte still lives back in Australia. Michael only see's her about two times a year when he goes to visit home, so finding her in his kitchen covered in pancake batter is surely a big surprise.
"Happy Birthday to you too!" He says, still squeezing the life out of the small blonde. "I cannot believe we are twenty-six, Charlie we are so fucking old." After getting scolded by his daughters for using bad language, Michael and his family sit down at the table, enjoying the breakfast Charlotte made them. Michael's nephew, Jackson decides to sit on his lap during breakfast and Michael surely doesn't protest. His small five-year-old nephew is the youngest Clifford cousin and Michael wants him to stay this little forever and ever.
Charlotte insists on doing the dishes and taking the kids to the park so Michael can have some alone time before tonight (Charlotte planned a huge dinner with all of Michael's siblings but he doesn't know that yet). He tries to get her to stay, not wanting her to spend her birthday with his kids instead of doing something for her but she just shakes her head and leaves, claiming that she already had her birthday celebration in Australia.
The tired now twenty-six year old falls back into his bed after taking a shower and reaches for his phone, seeing that he has a new text message from Luke. Over the past month, Michael and Luke have been talking everyday and after about a week of Instagram direct messages, they just decided to swap numbers instead. They talk all the time about anything. It means the world to Michael that him and Luke are building their relationship back up and he doesn't know this, but Luke feels the same way. He still hasn't told him about the kids because that topic is much to serious to just text about.
He opens the message and smiles.
lucas: Happy Birthday Mikey! You are officially an old man like me :-) I hope you have the best day ever and get everything you want. I couldn't get you anything because I'm so far away, but I would like to propose something. If you have time today maybe we could Facetime? I'd love to see your face. XX
me: thank you luke, i'm not that old don't be mean to me. you didn't have to get me a gift anyways, talking to you is already a dream come true, also i would love to face time! i'm going out later today but i'm free right now.
Less than twenty seconds later Michael gets an incoming Facetime call, Luke's contact name appearing on the screen. Him and Luke have been talking for a month now but they haven't done anything but text, Michael doesn't even know what Luke sounds like when he talks anymore. Luke hasn't even seen Michael's face yet, considering the picture he posted on Instagram was from almost four years ago. Pushing all his fear aside, Michael hits the accept button and waits for his ex boyfriends face to pop up on the screen.
A few seconds later it does, and Mike almost stops breathing. The camera is obviously propped up against something and he can see into what looks to be Luke's bedroom. Luke is sitting on a chair with his guitar on his lap, he gives Michael a smile before he starts to sing 'Happy Birthday" to him. Michael blushes a deep red as Luke sings the song to him, a never faltering smile on his face.
Once he finishes he sets his guitar down and scoots closer to the camera, letting out a deep sigh. "Hi Mikey." He whispers and Michael almost dies right there because Luke is so beautiful and amazing and Mike can't believe this is happening.
"Hello Lucas." He says with a smirk, knowing Luke hates when he gets called Lucas. "Thank you for singing to me, you didn't have to." Luke shrugs and smiles.
"I wanted to." Michael switches the camera angle and sets his phone on his beside table so that Luke can see more than just half of his face. The sun is shining in through his curtains and it lights up his face. Luke thinks Michael looks like an angel. His eyes travel from Michael's face to his arms, mouth opening wide.
"Holy shit Mike! You have so many tattoos, what the hell?" Michael glances down and realizes what he's talking about. He's wearing a low cut white tank top and his fully tattooed arms are showing, as well as his collarbones and the top of his chest, which are covered by even more ink. He giggles, yes fucking giggles, at Luke's shock. "You look so hot, oh my god." Luke says, slapping a hand over his mouth after the words slip out. His face turns bright red and Michael just smiles and laughs, throwing his head back.
"Thank you Lucas, I can say the same for you." He's not lying. Luke looks amazing: he's wearing a long sleeve navy blue shirt and his curly hair is a mess falling close to his shoulders. He's adjusting his glasses and Michael can't get the image of fifteen-year-old Luke doing the same thing out of his head. "Anyways, what have you been up to Mr. Rockstar?"
"Well, we are just finishing up the album, it's supposed to come out next month. So, I will just start doing press this week up until the release and that's about it. Not too much exciting stuff, I'm just glad the album is coming out, I've been working on it for way to many years." He fidgets with his hands while he talks and rolls up his sleeves. Michael looks over his arms seeing a few tattoos, but one catches his eye.
On the inside of Luke's pale forearm is a tattoo Michael can't believe. There in pretty black lettering are his lyrics, "rip my heart out, that's what loves all about". Michael isn't breathing, "Luke," he breathes, trying to find the words, "why do you have my lyrics tattooed on your arm?"
The blonde haired man looks where Michael's eyes are and smiles, "So that I can tell people the story behind it, tell them all about you and your lyrics and how much I love them, and you."
Michael falls in love with Luke all over again in that moment.
