Her hand was ice cold, which sent goose bumps up my arm and shivers down my spine. I pulled my hand back and turned away. "Sorry, my heater isn't working at home so I'm a little chilly," Sherry spoke breaking the silence. I just looked at her and cracked a half smile.
"So," Miss Oaks began, "this is Carson. He is 17 years old, very polite, sometimes can be a smart alec." She looked at him, staring into his eyes. Carson looked uncomfortable, and so was I. After about a minute or so, she finally turned away, faking a smile. "And is this is Bri. She's 15 years old, quiet, and well behaved."
Sherry looked at me and then at Carson. "Why are you guys here?" She asked.
Carson and I looked at each other. "Um, well," I began but Miss Oaks interrupted me. "Parents got in a car crash and passed away," she put her hand over her heart and shook her head. Oh my god, she was so fake.
"Poor things," Sherry spoke shaking her head.
"So, do you have any children of your own?" Miss Oaks questioned.
Sherry's eyes began to tear up, "I did," she wiped her cheek and then put a smile on. "They, um..." she hesitated, "they got too sick and died," she said showing no expression. But her eyes looked dark.
"Well, you'll have your own kids again if you want to adopt them," Miss Oaks said. Sherry looked at us and smirked. "I'll pick them up at noon tomorrow," She stood up and left. I looked at Carson, he looked scared and confused. "Go pack," Miss Oaks pointed out the door. We exited the office and went to our room. It was quiet while packing. Honestly, Sherry was kinda weird. Oh well, anything is better than this place.
"So," Carson broke the silence, "what do you think about her?"
I stopped what I was doing and looked at him. "I don't know," I said.
He nodded and walked towards me. "Remember what you said? You said, 'we'll have each other, and a new home, and someone who will love and take care of us.'"
I nodded and hugged him, "I love you Carson."
He hugged me back, "I love you too, Bri."
I hope things will turn out okay. I don't know, I have a gut feeling something will happen. The way she looked at us and talked about her children was weird. She was strange. I shook my head and finished packing.
Carson told me it was time to go eat dinner so I turned the television off and walked downstairs with Carson. We sat down and waited for our food. It was quiet. No one and I mean no one said a word. The doors open and Miss Oaks walked in, "hello."
"Hello, Miss Oaks," everyone said.
"Tomorrow at noon, Carson and Bri will be leaving. They have a new family."
Everyone turned to us. Carson and I just awkwardly smiled.
"I know you guys never really talked to them but you may say goodbye to them after dinner." And with that, she walked out of the room. It was really awkward in the room. People were whispering then looking at us and people were just staring. It made me feel uncomfortable. Carson and and I waited about 10 minutes for our food. When the food finally came to our table, Miss Oaks spoke, "don't get your hopes up about having a great family. I have known Sherry for a long time. She's dangerous," she warned.
"And you aren't?" Carson snapped.
"Listen, I know I can be rude but that's only because I knew she would adopt someone here, and I wanted to get you guys used to her. She's not normal. She is evil. She tortured her children. She will torture you too. She killed them. How? She poisoned them."
"Then why are you letting her adopt us?" I asked.
"Because if I stop her, she'll kill me, my family, everyone here, and my friends."
"Then call the cops," Carson suggested.
"I can't, she isn't human. She can do things, anything she wants. When you get there, run, hide, escape." She pulled us in a hug. "Good luck, I'm sorry."
