I woke up to the sound of a loud knock on the door. I moaned and turned on my side, away from the door. I pulled the blankets up, covering my face. I didn't realize I fell asleep last night. I probably got so lost in my thoughts I just passed out. Carson shook me and told me to get up. Every morning we have to wake up at 7 in the morning, get dressed and all that stuff by 7:15, get downstairs for breakfast by 7:20, then after breakfast you do stupid chores. When you're done with chores you go back to your room and don't come out unless you're told to. Finally, at 9:30 p.m. you go to bed. Same routine every day. We can't talk to anyone besides your sibling(s). Miss Oaks says its unhealthy to talk to strangers. She's so weird.

I walked downstairs and sat at our table. Everyone was seated and quiet. I heard the door open and I turned to face the door. Miss Oaks stood there with no expression.

"Good morning, kids," she said.

"Good morning, Miss Oaks," everyone said together.

She walked around the room not making eye contact with anyone. "I have good news for two of you today," she said stopping in her tracks.

"Is someone getting adopted finally?" a little girl asked, who looked about 8 years old. Miss Oaks slowly turned to the girl, and walked towards her slowly. The girl looked scared and hugged her brother. Miss Oaks stared at her, "Did you have permission to speak?" The little girl shook her head. "Use your words, Katy!" Miss Oaks yelled. "No," Katy said in a small voice. Miss Oaks picked Katy up by her hair, "do not talk without permission! You hear me?!" Katy whimpered and said yes. Miss Oaks put her down and walked away. Katy ran to her brother and they hugged each other. I looked at Carson and he played with his hands. His eyes looking scared.

I grabbed his hand and gave him a warm little smile. He did the same and then we looked at Miss Oaks.

"Two of you, at noon, will have an appointment with a lady," Miss Oaks looked at Carson and I. "Bri and Carson, go get dressed. The uniforms are on your beds." Carson and I got up and walked to our rooms.

"I can't believe this!" I smiled. "We might have a chance to get out of here!" Carson nodded and put his uniform on.

"What's wrong?" I asked.

"What if the lady is mean or something?"

"Oh, stop being so negative!" I playfully punched him. "I bet she'll be beautiful and amazing. If anything, nothing could be worse than this prison," I rolled my eyes. He nodded and chuckled. "We'll have each other, a new home, and someone who will love and take care of us," I smiled.

"You're right," he smiled back.

We walked downstairs in the office. Miss Oaks and a lady were talking. "Bri, Carson, sit down," she faked a smile. We did as told and the lady turned to us. She looked about 30-35 years old. She had short blonde hair. I wouldn't say she's pretty, but she's....okay I guess. She had brown eyes, or should I say dark dark brown eyes, her lips had a weird smirk on them, her nose was quite long and pointy, her cheek bones popped out, and her jaw line was very small. She was tall and thin. She put her hand out in front of me. "I'm Sherry. Sherry Burks," she said with an odd smile. I looked at Carson then at her. I slowly shook her hand. Her hand was ice cold.
