"You haven't said anything to me since you got here," Gabriel whines. "I just want to read, okay?" Sam's voice comes out harsher than intended, his eyes soften as he awaits the other teens reaction. "Right..sorry," Gabe mumbles, looking down at his bare feet on the dirty wooden floor.
"My names Sam, by the way," the Winchester peeks over his book to see the other male smile a bit. "Whatcha readin'?" Gabe then hums as he plops down onto the supplied sofa. Knowing he's not getting out of a conversation without hurting Gabes feelings again, he lightly sets his book down on the couches arm rest. "The Great Gatsby," Sam shrugs. "Really? I had to read that for school once."
"Did you like it?"
"I don't know, I didn't actually read it." Sam can't help but chuckle at the response. "So," Gabriel lays down and props his head up with both arms, "What do we do today?"
"Anything you want. Today's a free day." Gabe abruptly sits up. "You're telling me we can do whatever we want and you're reading? My god, Sam, have you no youth?" He gasps dramatically and Sam doesn't know whether he should role his eyes or laugh. "Well, what are you waiting for? Lets go swimming," Gabe tries tugging him up.
"I don't really like swimming," Sam shrugs. "Aright, buzz kill, what do you suggest we do? Study the world around us?" Sam opens his mouth only for a finger to cover his lips, "Never mind, I don't want to know the answer." Sam blushes but doesn't move away from the touch. "What if we just sit on the roof or something? I think I saw a way up when I was heading over here."
"Brilliant. I like your style," Gabe smirks.
Sam leads the way and they round to a tree on the backside of the cabin. "See?"
"Right..and we're going to climb that?" The blonde cocks and eyebrow and Sam shrugs again, "Yeah, why not?"
After getting a grip on the lowest limb, the Winchester swings his legs up to another branch. Gabriel blinks blankly at him. "Come on," Sam offers his hand, "I'll help you." With a huff and mumbled words, Gabe obliges and grabs ahold of Sam's hand. A little over halfway up the tree they reach the roof.
"Would you come on," Sam groans, Gabe still a branch too low to climb up with him. "Um," Gabe gives a weary smile and with a shaky voice he says, "Would now be a bad time to mention that I'm afraid of heights?"
"Really Gabe?" Sam sighs. He lays flat on his chest and puts out both hands to assist Gabriel the rest of the way. In the last second, Sam falls back and lets out a 'humph' when his back slams against the hard material behind him. "At least I had a soft landing," Gabe grins, his body flushed against the other teens at the moment. Sam suddenly becomes aware of the weight on top of him, he sucks in a sharp breath as his eyes flutter open. They hold eye contact for a good minute, neither of them making a move for the better or the worse. Finally, the wind blows and Gabriel's hair is whipped in front of his face, causing him to scrunch his nose and role off Sam to fix it.
"So," Sam exhales, he tries to hide the long breath he was holding the whole time, incorporating it with his sentence, "..What brings you to camp?" Gabriel lazily lets his head fall to the right so he can look at Sam instead of the blue sky above. "Just thought I'd get away from my family. The only reason my parents let me come is because my brother, Castiel, volunteered to be a camp leader." Sam takes notice in the tone he uses with his family, and Sam can relate. "What, Castiel and Gabriel, you guys religious?"
"Oh, yeah," Gabe laughs, "Beyond belief. You don't know how happy I am to get away."
"You mean..you're not like them?" Sam watches his tone, religion can be a touchy subject for some but he grew up atheist so it was hard to understand. Gabriel's face twists and for a second Sam thought he had upset the teen next to him, instead Gabe murmurs, "No."
"Why?" Sam pushes. "Because..my mom told me being apart of her family means following our religious rules; and one of those is being straight..." Gabe looks anywhere but at Sam, his lips pulled into a sad smile.
Sam's eyes narrow, Gabe had cowered when he confessed to not being straight. Did Gabriel expect a backlash? For him to be angry or disgusted?
Sam searches for the right words, the ones that will make his new friend feel better or understood; kind words that make Gabe feel comfortable because Sam is comfortable. Sam knows the words, unfortunately he's not brave like the other male, he can't openly confess to being gay. The silence becomes too much and Sam knows he has to say something before Gabriel comes to the conclusion that he is, in fact, not okay with Gabes sexuality.
"Gabe," Sam chokes, desperately trying to say something that makes sense, "I—"
"It's okay," he brushes off, pushing to stand to his feet, "It's weird. I get it. I'm sure I can get a new cabin an—"
"No! I mean—stay. Please," Sam's eyes wander Gabe to study any kind of emotion he could be giving off for how he feels. Out of luck, he pleads with his eyes until the other male lays back down with a deep sigh.
"Note to self, do not tell someone in the first thirty-minutes of meeting them that you're gay," Gabe whispers out loud to lighten the mood. They both silently laugh and Sam sees this as his moment to make things right. "Ah, so you are gay," he nods to himself, "I would have guessed bi."
The two talk for while, a long while actually; to the point where they both fall asleep on top of the roof. Sometime before them, Sam had taken off his hoodie to give to Gabriel, but now it's night. It's colder. The Winchester wakes up from a shiver that runs down his spine, chilling his entire body. His eyes land on Gabriel, who had curled up to Sam during his sleep, which is currently his only source of heat.
His choices are to leave Gabe up here alone, wake Gabe up, or go get a blanket and rejoin him.
"Okay, Gabe," Sam whispers, "You win this time." He quickly and quietly runs back inside for a blanket that will cover the both of them.
Satisfied that he's no longer cold, Sam stares up at the stars above him, no moon tonight. Gabe shifts from beside him and moves to Sam's shoulder. Sam smiles at the other teen and relaxes, eventually falling back asleep.
