"There she is again. That loser." "Haha, she can't hear us because she's deaf." "She's so lame" "that witch"

That's what they used to say about me, but that was only some of the things. They would always taunt me, and push me around. But not anymore...

1975
Maria was a different girl she would stay away from the crowd and the drama. She loved to bury her face into a book anywhere she went. Other kids would call her, freak, loner, creep, etc. Maria was in the 7th grade. So it was tough going through middle school without any drama, anyways. She would always walk home with her bag and that was it. Maria didn't have any friends, well she had this one best friend named Gabriella. Gabriella was a kind girl, and she was always interested in hanging out with the boys.

Maria lived in a small town called, Villa del Vino. It had a lot of little shops and it was filled with tightly packed houses. The roads were gravel and they still had horse carts to pull things around. Maria would always go for walks with her Nonna, which meant grandma in Italian. Maria had a Latino father and an Italian mother. So she had thick dark brown hair and she had beautiful tanned skin. Her mother moved to Mexico at the age of 21 and found Maria's father. Her mother Rosanna had to leave Italy with her mom because of her drunk father, and well Maria's father Carlos has lived in the village since he was a baby.

One hot afternoon Maria was sitting on her porch with a glass of lemonade and she saw a few of the richer girls walk by. She smiled at them but they laughed and snarled at her. All of a sudden Maria saw something sparkling on the street, so she ran over to pick it up. It was an old chain necklace with a jewel on it. When she picked it up it was a little bit hot from being in the sun. She carried it into the house calling for her Nonna. Her Nonna hurried down the stairs and grabbed the chain to study it. She looked at it and said something in Italian.

"What's wrong Nonna?" Asked Maria. "Nothing my little Maria." She said in a suspicious voice. Maria knew that something was up with the chain. She went into her room on the first floor and analyzed the jewel on the chain, it glowed a little. Maria thought it was the sunlight just giving off its glow but it seemed to have some sort of pulse to the sparkle. She set in on her side table and laid on her bed. She stared at the ceiling until she heard a knock on the window.  She opened the window for her friend, Danny. He has lived here for 2 years now and the first day he arrived at the school I'm Maria knew they'd be good friends. He climbed in easily since he'd been doing this for awhile, and he sat on a small chair Maria has had in her room for so long. He looked at the chain and said, "what's that Maria?" "Oh, nothing really, I found it." Maria replied with. Danny looked confused but shrugged it off and smiled.

They sat in silence together for about 30 minutes then they heard a knock at the door. Maria walked curiously to the doorway. She opened it and there was a women. She asked the women kindly, "Hello, can I get you something?" The women looked a little scared and said, "3 days..." Then she ran off. Maria turned to Danny with a worried look on her face. Danny looked at her confused and said "what was that all about?" Maria went into her room but closed the door before Danny could walk in. "Maria, can I come in?" "Go home Danny" Maria yelled through the door. She yelled at him like that often, but like he was the brother she never had.

That night Maria was lying on her bed with a book. Her little night stand light was on and nothing else. All of a sudden the light flickered and went out. The curtains of her window closed and the wind was the only thing letting them sway and reveal the moonlight. Maria didn't know what was going on, but when she tried to turn her light back on, it shocked her. She jumped back and set the book down and held her finger with pressure. She laid down under the sheet and shivered from a cold chill in the air. She saw something at the window by the corner of her eye. She turned her head to see a women standing there, starring at her. She couldn't make out the face of the women but she could see that the women was old. She squinted then rubbed her eyes, then the women was gone.

The next morning Maria woke up with the words, last day of school, in her head. She walked down the road with Danny all the way to the small school.

As soon as she sat in her seat the teacher started talking. The words that were coming out of the teachers mouth all of a sudden went blurry. The room starts to go dark and the walls started peeling to reveal rotten wood. Maria's chair slowly disintegrated and what used to be a classroom was now a forest of rot and mold.  She walked forward one step and tripped. She looked down to see bones, polled together with yet still a little bit of flesh. She screamed then the room turned back to normal and the teacher said, "Maria are you ok?" Maria nodded then went back to listening to the lesson.

That night when she was tucked under her sheet she heard something at the window this time it was the old lady actually knocking. Maria went over to the window and knocked on the glass of where the women's face was. The women looked very angry and then her face opened up to reveal 20 rows of teeth. Maria jumped back into her bed and closed her eyes. When she opened them and looked at the window there was nothing there.

All of a sudden she heard a knock at the door. She creeped down the hall to the front door. She opened the door and nothing was there. She heard something crash in the kitchen. She froze in horror, then sat down there. She heard a few things get thrown across the kitchen then, she proceeded slowly. When she got there she saw a women in a cloak walking frantically in circles. She was muttering something under her breath. It sounded like she was saying stop, help, and... You will be sorry. Maria yelled out, "Do you need help?" The women glared a her then came in real close. She grabbed Maria's arm then threw her upstairs. Maria cried out in pain then she asked, "Why are you doing this?" The women turned in Maria's direction and said, "your father..." In a rather raspy voice. "He used to make a fool out of me..." She said but this time she sounded a little more annoyed.

All of a sudden Maria saw her dad around the corner with an axe. Maria quickly looked back at the women while she was telling her story. Just then her father slashed the women's arm with the axe. She screamed, then he chopped off her head.

"Papa, why was that women talking about you and why did she try to hurt me?" Maria asked frightened. Her father replied with, "she was a women with evil powers, a witch some would say, she could not hear, so they would call her deaf witch. She would always release her anger towards others, but never me because she saw me as a non threat. Then one day in grade 8 she was pushed off a cliff by some punks just trying to cause trouble, and all I did was watch, watch them abuse her mentally and physically, then she just gave out and was too weak to retaliate. She knew I was watching and she screamed out for my help a few times but I couldn't do anything. So I watched as she, Emilia Sanchez just sat there helpless got killed. And her last words where... You'll be sorry."
