Chapter Two

Paxton had failed to reveal to Avery that the party was in Canton, a larger town about twenty minutes away from Willomoss. Paxton had promised to pay him back in gas, even though he was more irritated about having to drive home later with two drunk people in his car for twenty minutes.

He finally pulled up to the party house. It was medium sized, and surrounded by a dozen or so cars. A few people littered the lawn, drinks in their hands. As Avery, Paul, and Paxton filed out of the car the thumping of the music could be heard.

“It just looks like every other party.” Avery muttered, staring at the very unconscious person half lying in the hedges of the neighbor's yard. “They are so lucky they are in the college district.”

“Stop being so pessimistic.” Paxton told him as she swung open the front door, revealing a mass of swirling bodies.

“See ya later!” Paul yelled over the music, making his way through the dance floor in search of a drink.

Paxton’s hand encircled Avery’s wrist. “Don’t leave me alone okay?”

Avery nodded and let her lead him around the house until they found what used to be a dining room table that was now covered in an array of beer bottles, cups, and hard liquor.

He wasn’t surprised that she didn’t want him to leave her alone. Not only was she always cautious to make sure she doesn’t get taken advantage of at parties, she also has a fear of being alone. Or at least, that’s what Avery suspected since her parents were never home and she was always asking her friends to hang out.

Paxton poured herself some type of drink and offered Avery a cup of soda, which he refused. He wasn’t drinking out of anything that wasn’t closed when he got it.

Paxton emptied her cup a couple times before she dragged him out to the dance floor. Paxton was a good dancer, and many of the guys were watching her as soon as she started moving. She was about 5’4 and slim with a few curves in the right places. Her purple highlights were mesmerizing as they danced across the floor and Avery was surprised that no boy came up to them.

Then again, they probably thought she was taken by him, which Avery knew Paxton was doing on purpose.

After a few songs Paxton dragged him back to the drinks table. She flirted around a little bit but always reverted back to grabbing Avery’s arm.

“I need to pee!” Paxton screamed into Avery’s ear, causing him to wince. “Come on, escort me to the porcelain throne good sir!”

Avery chuckled and let her loop her arm through his. He half dragged her to the bathroom due to her now sluggish legs.

As they waited in line Paxton began excitedly telling him about a new band she had discovered. She was extremely animated, and even though she repeated herself several times Avery listened to her. He was used to her rambling about bands he had never heard before. Sometimes he’d even go home and look them up.

Eventually she was finally able to get into the bathroom. Avery leaned his shoulder against the wall across from the door and waited for her, watching the people playing beer pong in the other room.

Avery jumped suddenly as he felt a hand slide between one of his arms and his side to wrap around him. A body pressed against his back and he stiffened at the sudden warmth that came from it.
