Chapter Four

“I’m home.” Avery hung his keys on the key rack next the door and took in the fresh scent of his grandparent’s home.

The yellow one story house was comfortably cluttered on the inside. The kitchen was covered in an explosion of nick knacks, while the living room held over stuffed furniture and a small television.

Avery walked into the living room to see his grandparents sitting in their chairs. His grandfather had a book in his hands and his grandmother had a magazine open in her lap with scissors in one hand. “Hello honey, did you have fun?”

Avery nodded and sat down on the couch. The first time he had set foot in this house he had been astounded that so many memories could be packed in one house. Every painting, sculpture, and photo had a story. His grandmother could recite them from memory.

“Not too much fun, I hope.” His grandfather said, his brown blue eyes sparkling from above his glasses.

Avery laughed, “No, not too much.”

His grandmother nodded her head, “good boy. I washed your clothes, they’re on your bed to fold.”

“Thank you.” Avery passed by them into the small hallway. His room was on the left, before he had came to live with them it had served as a storage room. Now, it held a twin sized bed covered in a plain sky blue comforter. The surfaces of his dresser, desk, and bedside table where bare save for one picture frame. Even his book case was neat tidy, organized by the last name of the author and genre.

The picture was of him, his mother, and father. His mother was pregnant in it, and they were all happy. It was taken a month before Avery’s life was turned upside down.

Avery sat on his bed and kicked off his shoes, regarding the white walls. His old room, back in Maryland with his father, had been a mess. He’s covered his walls with silly drawings, posters, interesting pictures. Anything he could find. His room had been a collage for anything that made Avery think.

Then, he had moved in with his mother. She moved around a lot, in the short semester Avery had stayed with her they lived in two different houses.

Avery had left most of his things with his father, the things he had taken were either lost or forgotten.

Now, he couldn’t stand to have anything on his walls and his room was always clean. He liked knowing that if he ever had to leave again he wouldn’t be leaving anything behind. Also, having things tidy calmed him.

There was a few times, when his parents were still together, that he would awake to a destroyed house. Then, living with his mother, the house was a perpetual hell hole. Avery just couldn’t keep up with her friends.

Avery shifted slightly and began folding his clothes. Once everything was sorted into their separate piles he put them into their drawers, after he finished he sat down again. He had no idea what to do now.

His phone started vibrating and he looked down, his mothers face was on the screen.

Avery looked up at the picture of his family and sighed, he answered the phone.

“Hello?” Avery felt a slight hope in his chest, maybe it was good news.

“Aver-” there was a hiccup, “Avery?” His mother’s voice, which had once made Avery feel safe and secure, was slow.
