Chapter 5

I was changing out of my snow clothes when there was a knock on the door. I had just pulled on a warm shirt when Lia and Essie walked in. I never actually said come in but whatever.

"I know you haven't been eating but Essie and I came to ask if you wanted to eat dinner with us." Lia asked holding Essie's hand with her left and her right hand behind her back.

I was going to anyway but I guess they didn't know.

"Sure I will." I said shrugging.

Lia started smiling but immediately let it fade as she removed something from behind her back. I read the bottle and my mouth dropped. Cymbalta!

"I heard its suppose to help with depression and I thought it would make you happy so." She held out the bottle to me.

I stared at her in shock for a second then started bursting out laughing. I don't know why it was so funny but Kassandra was right this girl would do anything to get me to smile. Lia and Essie were looking totally confused.

"Where'd you get that from anyway?" I asked still chuckling.

Lia looked down at the bottle. "I can't tell you or I'll get in trouble."

"Look Lia Jerwicho's smiling." Essie said pointing out the obvious to her big sister.

"I can see that Essie why don't you go hold his hand?" Lia suggested letting go of Essie.

Essie came over but instead of holding her hand I slung her onto my back. Lia placed the botlle of Cymbalta onto my dresser and I couldn't help but laughing again.

Lia smiled. "Come on." She said leaving the room.

I followed her with Essie on my back down stairs and to the kitchen.

Lia ran into the kitchen screaming. "I got him to laugh! I got him to laugh!"

I walked into the kitchen with Essie on my back to see the whole Delgado family - and Enoch - starring at me.

"Did she really get you to smile?" Mr. Delgado asked.

I shrugged. "She's a miracle worker."

Lia turned to her dad. "Did you hear that Papi? I'm a miracle worker."

"Guess you are." Mr. Delgado replied.

"Esmeralda get off Jericho's back." Mrs. Delgado ordered.

"But he put me on here." Essie whined not wanting to get off.

"Jericho could you please put her down?"

I straightened my body so she was started sliding down my back.

"No Mami I want to stay on." Essie whined some more.

"Essie Jericho's gotta eat too. Now everyone get your food." Mrs. Delgado said.

Everyone lined up waiting for their food. It was like a lunch line at school. Essie was leaning against the

counter pouting 'cause her piggy back ride was over. Sadie who was last in line looked over at Essie and rolled her eyes.

"Essie!" She called.

Essie looked over at her. Sadie had her arms open waiting for her younger sister to come to her. Essie walked over to Sadie and lifted her arms. Sadie picked her up and made her way to the food.
