The last thing I expected to hear when I answered that phone call was that Alan was in a coma. I jus take him the day before and he was fine. He was laughing and making jokes. How did he go from joking to laying there in his hospital bed, looking peaceful with a breathing tube down his throat as the heart monitor beside his bed is all that let me know that he was still alive, but for how long? The doctors said that his body was shutting down slowly and that there was nothing that could be done.
His family, kids and ex wife haven't even visited. It sucked because despite of how he said that he didn't care that his ex-wife or children don't visit I can tell that he does. During his chemo sessions he would talk about hem and how much he wishes he was around more often and how regrets never being home.
The only people that have visited him since he was brought in yesterday have been me, Avery, the rest of the employees of SkyRocket and our friends but no family whatsoever.
"Man, Alan. What happened to the fighter I know?" I questioned no in particular as I looked at him as slept. His chest rising up and down thanks to the breathing machine.
A knock on the door made me look over and saw Avery standing there holding to cups in her hand and I smiled. She walked further in, closing the door behind her before walking over to and giving me one of the cups. Taking a sip of coffee I taste coffee and I thanked her
"Any sign of improvement?" She questioned but I shook my head
"Same as it had been since we got here" I answered and she nodded sitting beside me and sighed. We've been here since 7 this morning and it was already 4 in the afternoon.
"Visiting hours is almost over, I think we should head home" Avery murmured and I nodded. We've been here for hours and I was exhausted. Avery sent me to to gym to see how it was running while she staid behind but I was only there for a few minutes before coming back. Since we were still on break were didn't have to worry about missed school work.
"We'll come visit you tomorrow Al, don't you dare die on me while I'm gone" I said standing glove this bed and looked down at him as he continued to sleep with no care in the world. Patting his shoulder gently, I moved aside so Avery could give him a kiss before following me out of the room.
"He'll be okay" she murmured and I nodded though we both knew that it was a matter of time before he just stops fighting.

I woke up to my phone blaring and groaned looking at the time to see it was 2 am. Pressing the answer button without checking ID
"Hello?" I answered and Avery shifted beside me and opens her eyes looking up at me with confused tired eyes
"Hello is this Mr. Sage Savage?" The voice on the other end questioned and I sat straighter making Avery do the same
"May I ask who's looking?" I asked and there was a pause on the other line before there was some shuffling
"It's Doctor Hudson, in Mr Alan Green's Doctor" the lady said and I swallowed the lump in my throat that was threading not suffocate me "I'm calling to tell you that Mr Greene has passed away"
I just sat there holding my phone against my ear as her words repeated in my head like a broken record.
"Sage? baby?" Avery whispered as she sat up and grabbed my phone and I could hear her talking to the doctor before she hung up "baby"
"He's gone" I whispered, my voice cracking with each other. He's the second person I've lost to cancer. First my grandfather and now my best friend? Who is it going to b next?
