"Dammit!"

Mason whacks the stone wall with her palm. She had sprinted to reach the screams but took a wrong turn after a flying reptile decided she appeared tasty. The caves are silent once more. Mason holds as still as she can, straining for any noise--any hope--that her rescuers are still alive. She gently leans her ear against the stone wall. Voices. Definitely voices. But how to get to them!! The maze of corridors is difficult enough to maneuver in let alone back-track. The reoccurrence of monsters doesn't help either.

And then the voices behind the wall start to grow quieter. Mason frowns. She takes a step to her left. They're heading the wrong way. If they go the opposite direction of her she'll never find them and chances are they'll be eaten. Mason shudders. This'll probably attract all sorts of monsters, but it's my only chance...

She takes a step back and cups her hands around her mouth.

"HELP!" She shouts.

The echoes bounce off the walls. Monsters screech and growl distantly in the sea of darkness.

"HELP ME!" She shouts again.

And then she hears it. A knock in the cave walls. Again. Knock, knock, knock. Like a steady drum calling her home. Mason grins and hurriedly picks up her things. Knowing the knocking would probably bring out some terrible creatures, Mason keeps her machete out at the ready.

Her feet move faster. Her body has a newfound energy and the adrenaline in her veins masks the aches in her muscles. She has a goal in sight once more. Mason doesn't have to be alone anymore. She follows the beating sound like a lost ship follows a lighthouse beam--a beacon in the dark.
