After the old man was gone, my dad, Melany and I all watched a few episodes of Heartland. Soon a car pulled up in the driveway and a lady from the Hospital stepped out. Her face looked grim as she looked at Mel and my worried faces. I saw a single tear slip down her face and land in the dirt but no more than one slipped out.

She walked to the porch and I ran to the door. I yanked it open just as she was about to knock. "Hello. You must be Maddie. Your mother talked about you a lot. And this must be Melanie. Is your father around. This news I bring.... you all must hear it."

I nodded and let her in. Mel led her to the living room while I ran to the upstairs bathroom. My churning stomach made my face pale. I knew what was coming. I got to the bathroom in time and was instantly sick. When I was sure I couldn't loose anymore, I stood, flushed, and washed my mouth out. I washed my hands and then walked back downstairs.

"There you are. You okay?" my dad asked.

"Yeah. let's hear it." I said, my voice shaking.

The lady nodded and I climbed onto my dads lap and laid my head on his chest. Melanie sat on the other side of him and laid her head on his shoulder.

"I'm Mr. Jacobs. Im afraid I have some news. Mrs. Cole  slipped into a coma and her heart rate dropped drastically. They don't think that she will make it."

I felt numb. It couldn't be true. Im having a nightmare. I pinched myself. Nope. it was real. It was happening. I nodded and walked to the kitchen. I grabbed an apple berry juice box and walked to the table. I looked out the window at the barn and one head poked out of the stall. Rembrandt.

Rembrant's POV

Maddison came into the barn. From the moment the lady showed up I knew something was wrong. Maddison sat on the trunk outside my stall. I didn't know what this feeling was but I liked it. Rocky told me it was called love. I loved Maddison. She never wants to hurt me or anyone else.

She began crying with her head in her hands and I nuzzled her back. She looked up and I pushed the saddle off the stand and onto the trunk next to her. She looked confused so I nudged the bridle until it too fell onto the trunk. She gave me a surprised look and unlatched my stall door. She hugged my neck and for the first time I let her. I wrapped my head and neck around her and let her sob into my mane.  When she let go I let her lead me out of the stall. She put the bridle and saddle on me and led me to the ring. She slipped her foot into the left stirrup and set herself in the saddle. She gently nudged my sides and Misty and Smokey told me that she wanted me to move. I walked forward and another nudge told me she wanted to go faster.

I began to trot and she nudged me again. Going into a lope, then finally a gallop. She pulled gently on the reigns and I slowed to a stop. When she opened the gate, she guided me toward town and we took off at a gallop. She stopped at a small farm with a blood bay warmblood.

The girl atop her pushed the mare toward us. I remembered her. She was nice too.

As soon as she began talking, Madison's tears began to fall again.

I was untacked and put into the field with the other horse while Maddie went in with the other girl.

I grazed under the apple tree and awaited my rider.
