(yes I changed her name)
- Alanna -
"Ashton, I'm really nervous," I confessed as Dave pulled out of the driveway of the house.
"Why? It's just school," Luke shrugged, turning in the front seat to look back at me.
"I know, but it's a new school," I said, watching the other houses in the neighborhood pass by. "Everyone knows each other, and then there'll be me; the weird girl no one knows."
"You aren't 'the weird girl no one knows'. You'll just be the new girl," Calum corrected me, looking over at me with disappointment.
"Yeah," Ashton reasoned. "Just find a nice girl and ask to sit with her at lunch. You'll be fine."
"But what if everyone hates me?"
"Nobody will hate you if they don't even know you," Michael pointed out. "Just be nice to everyone and they'll ask you to sit with them."
About ten minutes later we rolled up to Target. The boys were all hidden under their hats and sunglasses, while I was just normal. No one even knew me.
Ashton had a list from the school listing everything I'd need for school, and the boys went to Starbucks while Ashton and I went to find everything.
"Are you really that nervous?" Ashton asked as I picked out a light purple book bag.
"Yes! I don't like a lot of attention," I hugged the bag to my chest as we walked to the back of Target where the school supplies were.
"It'll be okay. Just remember that if they ask you a lot of questions you don't have to answer them," Ashton reminded me.
"But if I don't they'll ask why I didn't answer."
"Alanna, you're thinking too much," Ashton said as his eyes scanned the list again.
"I can't help it," I sheepishly said, reaching up to grab looseleaf paper.
"I know you're nervous, but everything will be okay," Ashton breathed out. "Hey, I saw something I wanted to look at, do you mind if I go look?" Ashton asked, and when I shook my head he handed me the list and walked off.
"I'll be right back!" He cried over his shoulder.
I turned back to the list in my hands. Two Binders.
I looked up, and sighed in defeat upon seeing the only binders were at the top of the shelf. I stood up on my tip toes and stretched, reaching my hand up. After even jumping a few times to reach, I heard a laugh come from behind me.
"Can you at least help me?" I whined, giving Michael a look of annoyance as he watched me struggle.
"Michael! Come help me!" Luke cried from a few aisles away, and I watched as Michael gave me a shrug and jogged off, crying a careless apology over his shoulder.
I groaned and dropped my arms to my sides and gave up.
"Hey. Do you need help?"
I looked up at the sound of the new and unfamiliar voice, finding a boy that looked about my age standing in front of me with a Target uniform on. The boy was quite cute; with tousled brown hair and sparkling green eyes. His smile showed off his perfect teeth and cute dimples. His name tag read Nathan.
"Yeah," I finally admitted, feeling myself blush.
"What color do you want?" he asked, coming over and standing beside me.
"Can I have purple and white?" I asked him, getting a whiff of his colon as he effortlessly reached above us.
"Thank you," I squeaked and graciously took the binders.
"So, uh –" Nathan began.
"Alanna!" I turned to find Michael and Luke standing there, holding Starbucks cups.
"Hurry up," Luke whined, and I watched as Calum appeared beside them, squeezing hand sanitizer onto his own hands.
"Thanks again," I gushed and turned and followed the boys over to the other aisles for supplies.
__________
"Do I look okay?"
"Alanna..." Calum slowly began as he pierced a piece of scrambled egg with his fork. "For the millionth time; you look fine."
Michael laughed and stood from the kitchen table, carrying his plate and glass over to the sink.
Ashton, who was washing the plates off, looked over at me. "Go brush your teeth kiddo and we'll leave."
I nodded and slid my plate over to Luke, who happily ate the rest of my breakfast. After emptying my cup I ran upstairs and did a once over on my outfit. For my first day at my new school I wanted to look nice, so I dressed in a simple black romper, a jean jacket, and black sandals. I had braided my hair last night and when I took it out it fell down my back in soft waves.
I brushed my teeth, made sure I had everything I needed, and then ran downstairs so Ashton could take me to school.
"Bye Cal! Bye Michael! Bye Luke!" I called over my shoulder to the boys as Ashton opened the front door and we walked outside.
"Have a good day!" Calum called right before the door shut behind us.
We got into the car and started our drive. The second we pulled out onto the main road my leg started bouncing, and I reached my hands up and started twirling a piece of my hair around my fingers.
"There's nothing to be so nervous about," Ashton said as he pulled to a stop at the red light.
"There's so much to be nervous about," I argued, twirling my hair faster as my nerves worked up just talking about it. "I won't know anyone, my classmates could hate me, I'll sit alone at lunch, and –"
Ashton rolled his eyes and made a turn. "Alanna you're just freaking yourself out more. Relax; everything will be okay."
"Okay..." I trailed off. We arrived at the school in a matter of five or so minutes. Ashton pulled up and stopped at the curb of the sidewalk leading to the school.
Groups of students walked into the front of the school together.
"Bye. Thank you," I told him as I grabbed my bag and opened the door, sliding out.
"Bye. Good luck!" Ashton called.
I let out a sigh and closed the car door behind me, reaching up a shaking hand to touch my mother's necklace.
