I'm not quite sure just how long I sat there in my own world. An orange sky peeks through the dark clouds over our heads when uniformed men stalk through the cobblestone streets, large dogs with gnarly teeth beside them, and a shiny silver whistle hangs around their necks. The men walk towards our building. Heavy footsteps ring through the corridors.
"Don't let them see you!" Mother pulls me from the window into a corner with Filip and Khon, his father is still somewhere on the streets. Khon hugs me from the other side of Filip, carefully stroking my hair. "You'll be okay. Everything is going to be fine." My little brother runs to mother and father, crying hysterically. the footsteps stop near our door. Not being able to hold things together any longer, I bury my face in Khon's wool sweater, crying silently. "Shhhh" He holds me tighter, gently kissing my forehead. My arms wrap around his torso. "You'll be okay, nothing's going to happen as long as I'm here."
The door busts open, loud shouts in german fill our ears. An iron hand grips my wrist, yanking me from my best friend. I start flailing in panic, tears falling at an alarming rate. "No! Khon, please help!" He tries to wrestle me out of the man's arms, only to be pushed to the ground. "Et's raus hier raus*" The blonde shouts to several other men. Tossing me over his shoulder, he stalks out. "Sukar! Daliah, no!" Was the last thing I heard before I was hauled away with other unlucky souls.
That's the first time he's called me by my real name...
