Papa spent the night and we wake up hoping to find Mama on the small cot, but alas, no Mama and still no food. I part my dry lips and lick them in attempt to heal their cracking. Exhaling, I get up, grab a cup, and walk down the steep staircase to get water. Just as I shut the damaged wooden door, the train screeches in. Floods of people flock the streets to leave this Hell. I soon find myself pushing against the current to get back home, only to get caught up in the flow. Through the pushing and shoving, I drop the cup and fall to the ground. I scramble back to my feet and continue to stumble forward.
Everything slows down once we get to the railroad track. People pack themselves in tattered boxcars. The stench is horrible! Mold, urine, and rotting flesh. One of the uniformed men push me into one of the cars, but I slip out in panic and run to hide. I can't leave. Not now that mother is gone. I have Papa, Filip and Kohn. Oh Kohn. I can't leave him behind. Not now, not ever. He's my best friend I've ever had, even before this hell started. I had no friends before the ghetto but he and I have gotten along quite well.
Scrambling behind the corner of a building, I bump into someone and they take me in their arms. "I saw you get pushed in." Kohn. "I-I didn't mean to get that close, honest!" Kohn nuzzles his nose in my neck. "Sukar" He straitens himself and caresses my face in his calloused hands. "You're the only light I have left in this dark, shadowy world of sorrow." He rests his forehead against mine, staring deeply in my eyes. We breath heavily as the train screeches away. "I can't hide it anymore." His left hand trails down the side of my body to sit on my waist. "I love you, Daliah."
Love is inevitably torn apart in this taste of death we have been given to call home...
