When we get back, Filip is playing on the floor with a toy car, some legos, and a few action figures. He looks up at us with his dark eyes. "I came back but no one was here. I thought you guys went on the train without me!" Father comes forward to sit on the floor with him. "Daddy! You're back! You're gonna stay this time, right?" The little boy's smile is so innocent and hopeful that no one wanted to tell him anything that was really happening. Papa mirrors his expression. "I hope so, but Mama and I are still deciding." Filip hands him the mini car, and they start playing.
Kohn and I sit on the bed, backs up against the wall. "What if Mama ran away?" I whisper. I hear him exhale. "I don't know. You dad would stay to take care of us, I guess." My head falls to lean on his shoulder. His arm wraps around my shoulder, tracing the star on my armband. "What if I die from the bullet wound?" My mind thinks aloud as I watch my family on the floor now playing with the action figures. "Look at me" My eyes look up to meet his, lips pursed into a thin line. "You won't die" "How do you know?" "Because you're strong and as long as I'm here, I'll help you keep your faith." "But I have nothing to live for!" "What about me?" "Yeah? What about you?" "You have me! And your mother, father, and brother!" Closing my eyes, I cherish this moment.
Just then, Filip's stomach lets out a loud groan. "Papa, do you have food?" "No, sorry" "I think Mama's still out looking for food. She'll be back soon." Our smiles fade as the three of us give each other knowing glances. "Hopefully Filip, hopefully" Papa sighs.
Mama may not be coming back...
