Bolting down the tight staircase, Kohn pulls me out of the small dirty building we call home and down several streets. We come across a tight alleyway between two decaying houses. Two shadowy figures seem to be doing something. One is pinned against the wall and a taller one is keeping them there. Looking at each other, we silently agree to run in. As we approach them, I realize something. That's not just any person. That's my mother being held by an officer! His gloves lay on the ground several feet away and his hands wander under her clothes. That's when she notices us. "Daliah, stay back" Despite her shout, I creep closer only to have a gun pointed in my face. Kohn drags me back, keeping me against his chest. "Let me go! That's my mother!" What happened next really surprised me.
A man with messy brown hair also spots this event and rushes over, knocking out the officer with a brick to the head from a destroyed building. Mama slaps him right across the face! "I told you not to come back, fool!" Papa! "I didn't do this for you." He turns in my direction and grins. "I wanted to make sure the kids have someone that will properly care for them." Breaking out of my friend's arms, I run to my father and hug him, wincing a bit from the pain brought to my shoulder. "I've missed you so much!" Tears run down his face, catching dirt and grime. "My poor little girl. I saw everything, everything" His watery words catch me a surprise. "You knew?" "Well, of course! I would never not hide to watch over my daughter when she's captured and will certainly get hurt. Besides, only a child of mine would struggle so violently against an officer like that" I giggle. Mother storms passed us fuming. "Yeah, that didn't end too well..." "What you did was so brave, I'm so proud of you." Father lets me go and averts his eyes to Kohn.
"Thank you boy" Kohn's shocked voice replies. "M-Me?" He moves past me and sets a hand down on the boy's shoulder. "Yes, you. You've been caring for Daliah more than anyone. This proved it. You pulled her away from getting into even more hot water. You are her guardian angel sent from heaven." His cheeks turn a bright red. "W-Well, I wouldn't go as far as saying that, but yeah, I do look after her quite a bit." I cut in to save him from any more chatting. "Why don't we go home?" After gaining their approval, we slowly make out way back to our small room in silence.
