Alec was in the training room practicing his knife throwing. He could never seem to get it quite right. He was about to throw another dagger when he felt a sharp pain go through his body. It was coming from the back of his hand. His parabatai rune. That could only mean one thing.
He immediatly dropped his knife and ran as fast as he could out of the training room. He raced down the halls towards Jace's room. Isabelle had stopped him on the way though.
"Where's the fire?"
He showed her his parabatai rune. It was quickly turning from black to white. He had to get to Jace's bedroom, and fast.
"Oh my god. Where is he?"
"I don't know. I was heading to his bedroom when you so rudely stopped me!"
Isabelle didn't reply. She just turned and raced down the hall, nearly tripping on her heels. Alec followed her. Catching up to her quickly and eventually passing her. Adrenaline can do a lot to a person. He raced down the hall turn corners and making his way through the intricate maze of the Institute.
They eventually reached Jace's room. The door was no longer on its hinges, but lying on the florr instead. They carefully stepped into the room to see if Clary and Sebastian were still in there. Sure enough, Sebastian had Clary backed into a corner, her face streaked with tears. Sebastian had his back to them, so he could not see them enter the room, but Clary could. As soon as she saw them, her eyes got big in hope. She was trying to hide it. She was doing a pretty good job because it looked like Sebastian didn't notice. Alec put his finger to his lips as if to tell her to be quiet. Isabelle slowly stepped into the room. She had taken off her heels so they wouldn't click too loudly and get them caught by Sebastian. Alec looked around the room and then saw him.
Jace was lying on the floor next to his bed. He looked lifeless or almost. Alec couldn't hold his gasp. Sebastian turned around and Isabelle caught him in the stomach with her heel. He doubled over. Alec raced over to Jace to check his pulse. He was still breathing but very faint. He didn't have much time. Clary was helping Isabelle with Sebastian as Alec got out his phone to dial Magnus's phone number. He didn't want to, but knew he had to. Jace was too far gone for an iratze to heal him. He doubted an iratze would work anyway, especially if Sebastian had used demon metal against Jace. There was no healing that wound.
Alec dialed Magnus's phone number and Magnus picked up on the third ring.
"Alexander, I told you-"
"We need you! Come to the Institute as fast as possible. Jace is dying."
"What happened?"
"Sebastian stabbed him with a dagger, possibly made with demon metal."
"Is he still breathing?"
"Yes, but very faint. He doesn't have much time." Alec's eyes were going cloudy with tears. "Just please, come here. I need you to do this for me, and I will leave you alone forever."
Magnus took a long exasperated breath. "I'll be there in ten."
"Please hurry!"
Alec hung up the phone. He looked down at his parabatai. He couldn't believe that Jace might actually be gone. After all they had been through together. Alec has known him since he was 11. He couldn't lose Jace. Jace was his parabatai, his best friend, and his brother. What more could he have asked for? The fighting in the background was beginning to unfold like background noise.
He still remembered the day that Jace had asked him to be his parabatai. It was the best day of his life. It meant that Jace needed him. He needed him to help him through life. To get him through things. And that was exactly what Jace had done. And what had Alec done? Go and let his best friend get killed while saving the girl he loved. He would never forgive himself. It would taunt him everyday. The guilt would close in on him. He wouldn't be able to do anything. He couldn't lose his parabatai. He just couldn't.
Alec checked his watch. Where was Magnus? He checked Jace's pulse again. It was still there, but getting fainter by the minute. He started speaking to Jace, even though he knew he probably couldn't hear him.
"Please don't leave me Jace. I need you. You have gotten me through everything. I still remember the day you asked me to be your parabatai. Do you? Everyone thought you were better than me. My dad thought it. The Clave thought it. Izzy and Max looked up to you as the great warrior they wanted to be like. But that day, the day you asked me to be your parabatai, I knew you meant that you trusted me enough to ask me to help you. You were telling that you weren't this lone and self-suffcient warrior able to do everything alone. You needed me. So I realized that there was one person who didn't assume they were better than me. You. Do you remember that day, Jace?"
And then, a miracle happened. Jace opened his eyes and looked up at Alec, "Of course I do. How could I forget I picked the greatest guy in the world to be my best friend." He was wearing a weak smile on his face.
Alec couldn't believe it. He wiped the tears from his cheeks, "Jace?! You-You were dead!"
"I know. But, I am kind of immortal now, with the heavenly fire and all."
Then Magnus came running in. He was wearing a pair of sweats, an old t-shirt, and a crappy sweatshirt. Alec had never seen him look so... mundane. When Magnus saw Jace lying on the ground awake and not dead, he looked over at Alec. "Can I speak with you? Alone."
Alec knew immediatly this wasn't going to end well. He slowly got up and walked over to Magnus who stepped out into the hall. The girls seemed to be doing well fighting Sebastian on their own. They were kind of tossing him back and forth between each other like they were taking turns hitting him. And then, Sebastian disappeared. Just gone. POOF. He vanished into thin air. The girls stopped throwing punches and kicks and looked at each other, confused.
He stepped out into the hall with Magnus. He expected Magnus to stop walking once they were outside. But he didn't. They were just going to talk, right? Magnus continued walking down the hallway until it seemed they were out of seeing distance of the room. As soon as they were, Magnus turned around, grabbed Alec's shoulders, and kissed him.
Alec definatly wasn't expecting that. He sort of jumped. It startled him, but it didn't stop him from kissing Magnus back. It was nice to kiss him again. He didn't think he would ever kiss Magnus again. They just stood there for a while kissing. the hallway just seemed to fade away. All that Alec was aware of was Magnus's mouth on his.
----------------------------------------------------
Clary and Isabelle were taking turns throwing punches and kicks at Sebastian. It was kind of fun. Until, he just vanished. Clary accidently kicked Isabelle in the stomach thinking it was Sebastian. Clary looked at Isabelle and Isabelle looked right back at Clary, holding her stomach. They both had the same look on their faces: complete and total confusion.
Clary heard a groan. Had something happened to Alec? She rushed over to where Jace lay. His eyes were open and he was breathing. Clary nearly screamed right then, but realized that wouldn't be such a good idea. She settled for a simple, "JACE!" A smile growing across her face. She threw her arms around his neck. She felt him wrap his around her back, tight, like he would never let go again. And she didn't want him to.
