Chapter Three

Friendship and Nightmares

August 12-October 22nd

The boy's prediction comes true in no time at all. Without even thinking too much about it, they become an integral part of her life. It doesn't even take a full day if she's being honest with herself. They refuse to let her be the random new girl that no one ever talks to.

They both meet her out front the next day before school starts. She's once again not had breakfast and her stomach is growling when she hops out of the car. She glances at her cousin only for a second before she's rolling her eyes and looking away from him. She hasn't talked to him since the day before and she has no plans to start now.

She rushes by him in order to get to her newly acquired friends. She misjudges the distance in her hurry to get away from her cousin and runs right into Haneul and Tobias. Somehow they both manage to catch her and keep all three of them from plummeting to the ground.

"Whoa, what's the rush?" Tobias asks as they both right here. She's gasping for air as she looks up and into their faces. She isn't quite sure where to begin. They know about her cousin messing up the directions on purpose, of course. But they don't know about the mean things he's already said. They don't know about the looks he gives her, looks that could burn her alive if she let them.

"I'm just ready to see you guys," she says instead. She doesn't mean to like to them, not really. But she feels like telling them the truth would only lead to them thinking that she's an attention seeker. And, she isn't.

"We're ready to see you too you know, but we'd rather you stay in one piece," Haneul says as he rubs his thumb over her chin. Laikynn is a bit taken aback by his touchy-feely actions. But she guesses he figures she's comfortable with it after her hugging him the day before. She thinks about it for a minute and realizes that he isn't wrong. She doesn't mind him touching her and she didn't mind Tobias doing so either. Which is funny because she can't stand for any of her remaining family to so much as lift a finger in her direction.

"I'll try to remember that," she says when he pulls his hand away from her face. He winks and loops his arm in hers. Tobias does the same on her other side. They walk into the school and they lead her toward the cafeteria. "We heard your stomach as soon as you opened the car door we are going to make sure you get something to eat."

"They haven't had breakfast at my aunt's for two days it's really starting to weird me out," she says with a laugh as she allows them to pull her into the cafeteria. Tobias goes to wait in line for her while Haneul finds them somewhere to sit. The room is more crowded that she anticipated it would be.

"I'm so used to eating breakfast with my mama," she whispers as they wait for Tobias to bring her something. "I don't know how I'm going to get used to eating without her." Haneul stills in his spot beside her. He isn't at all sure what to say to her in this situation. He's never had to deal with the pain of losing a parent.

He decides to tread with caution. He isn't sure what to say to make her feel better. But he decides that he wants to do just that. He's only just met her but he doesn't like seeing her so upset, not one bit. "What kind of breakfasts did you have with your mama?" he asks, using the word she used. He didn't want to upset her by calling her something else.

"She used to make all kinds of cool things," she says. "She'd go online and find recipes then she'd try a different one of them out on me every morning." She's smiling as she relives those memories.

"Did she ever make anything that you didn't like?" Haneul asks. His grin is infectious and his raised eyebrows make her giggle. He looks far too comical when he makes that facial expression.
