I realized to late that one hour was not enough time to get ready, especially when you have to hide the fact that you are excited about everything from your parents, who are eyeing you suspiciously anyways because they think that you are going on a date with someone you hate.

I called Kyle around 6:30.

“This is Kyle.” I heard him say as he picked up the phone.

“Hey Kyle this is Sage.” I said, with a small quiver in my voice. I hoped he couldn’t hear it or at least mistook it for something wrong with the phone line.

“Oh hey Sage!” he sounded really excited.

“I was just calling to let you know that… um … you don’t have to pick me up.”

“Oh, um alright?” there was a question in his voice.

“I will be there though.” I promised.

“Ok. I guess I’ll see you there then?” he asked.

“yeah.” I replied. After he gave me the address of the house, I hung up and put my phone into the pocket of my jeans.

At seven o’clock there was a knock on my door. I finished brushing my hair and set the brush down on my dresser. My newly painted nails, brushed the door knob as I grasped it in my hand carefully. When I opened it, Chris stood against the doorframe, his arms nonchalantly crossed in front of him. “Ready?” he asked, in his apathetic tone.

He was wearing dark jeans that sagged slightly. Underneath his usual leather jacket was a neon blue t-shirt with a Band logo across the front. His dark brown hair fell across his face and a few strands fell lightly into his eyes, making the blue stand out like spotlights. I grimaced as I realized we matched. I looked down at my dark skinny jeans and blue sequined shirt. Even my hair swept across my forehead lightly since it was parted on the side.

I looked up and glared at him. I couldn’t seem to help it. It had become a knee jerk reaction to glare or scowl at him.

He only chuckled and stood up straight. He looked past me into my room at the mess I had made. Clothes lay across my bed, over my chair, hanging out of drawers. If I hadn’t known any better I would have thought that I had been robbed.

As his eyes scanned my room they caught on the pile of folded papers by my bedside. A look of pain shot across his face and he quickly looked away. I moved closer to him to block his view into the room and at the same time he took a step in, closing the distance between us. I grimaced, but didn’t dare step back.

“Almost,” I replied, trying to close the door and push him out.

The toe of his shoes stopped the door from closing and he looked up at me. “I did say an hour.” He reprimanded. “What do you have left to do?”

I stepped back from him and walked over to my dresser where a silver necklace with a blue gem hung lay. It was the final touch to my outfit, and it had to go on absolutely last. I picked it up, showing it to Chris, before I put it around my neck. I fumbled with the catch a few times, before a new set of hands grazed my neck. The fingers were slightly callused and rough against my soft skin. They hooked the latch easily then they were gone. When I turned around Chris stood a few feet away with an impatient look on his face. “Ready now?” he insisted as he walked out of my room and down the hallway towards the stairs, not even waiting for a reply.

I grabbed my bag quickly and headed out after him, trying to slow my pounding heart and cover up the blush on my cheeks. The effect that his hands had on my skin was totally uncalled for and ridiculous, but I couldn’t make the feeling go away.

As we walked through the front room to the door I made a point to turn to my parents a grimace. They only laughed and shooed me off. When I got out the door, chris was already in the driver’s seat of his truck.  I climbed into the passenger seat and stayed silent.

The drive was full of awkward silence. Half way through the drive, Chris tried to turn on some music, but that just made the silence that much louder so he ended up turning it off.

We followed the directions that I had given him to the house that the party was being held. We drove past the house and around the corner where I made Chris park. I didn’t want to be seen with him. I unbuckled and opened the door, to see Chris waiting outside with his hand outstretched. I rolled my eyes and stepped out by myself brushing past his hand and walking down the street towards the house.

He walked close behind me. So close in fact that I could feel  his warm breath on my neck every time I stopped for just a motherent and I hate to admit it, but I stopped a few times just for the reassurance that he was still there.

When we reached the house, I turned around to say goodbye to him, but he was already caught up with some girl on the front lawn. The jealousy inside of me bubbled up, but I resisted the urge to walk over and push her away. I walked into the house and started to search through the rooms to find Kyle.
