I ran through the door and slammed it behind me. The air rushed around me as I flew up the stairs. I shut my door and sat in front of it, blocking anyone who tried to open the door. The tears streamed down my face, making my mascara run.
People were calling my name from downstairs, but I wasn’t paying any attention. When someone knocked on my door it made me jump.
“Sage, please let me in,” said Sam. There was a push at my door, but I held firm in my position.
“Go away,” I sobbed.
“Sage,” my mother cooed.
“Go away!” I demanded. There was silence outside my door, then I heard a door slam below me and then another one and I realized that Chris must be home.
After a while, when there was no more noise outside of my door, I moved to my chair and wrapped a blanket around me. I tried to fall asleep, but it seemed impossible. I just kept staring at the wall. Eventually my eyes drifted to my billboard of pictures. There were pictures of me and Sam, ranging from when we were little to just a few weeks ago. There were pictures of me and my sister. Then I saw the one picture of me and Chris.
My mother had placed it there one year in hopes that it would make me more excited to play with him. In truth it had done just the opposite. After staring at that picture for an entire year I hated him even more. Now after two days I was starting to feel for him and that was definitely not acceptable.
There was a knock on my door and then it creaked open slowly. I slipped my head underneath my blanket and slowed my breathing to pretend that I was asleep. I figured it was just Sam, coming in to go to sleep, so I lifted the blanket a little bit to peak out.
Chris stood in my door way staring at me. Even in the dark I could tell his eyes were tear stained. I wondered if anyone had tried to force their way into his room and comfort him. Probably not.
He walked farther into my room and stood in front of me. He looked like he was contemplating something, then he crouched down beside me, and started to pull the blanket from over my head.
I shut my eyes quickly, but was careful not to scrunch them closed. I could tell that he was getting closer, even though my eyes were closed. I had to be very careful not to jump when his breath hit my cheek. Surprisingly it felt comforting.
I accidentally sighed, which made him stop his decent. I quickly regained control over myself and my breathing slowed again, although I can’t say the same about my heart. His hand brushed my hair and smoothed it down. His hand continued down my face then stopped and rested on my cheek. I gently pushed against it, wanting the warmth to envelope me.
“I know I promised, not to say anything, but I know you were lying. You felt something, and no matter what you do, I’m going to get you to admit it, because,” he faltered a little, took a deep breath and continued, “Because I love you.”
I felt something warm against my head and realized he was kissing the top of my head. I felt my face get warm and I knew I was blushing. I hoped he wouldn’t be able to see it in the dark.
He sighed and his hand pulled away from my face. He stood up and started to walk away. I finally heard my door shut and footsteps on the stairs. I opened my eyes and looked at the door then my eye caught on something new on my table.
My shoe was sitting on the table with something sticking out of it. I realized that I had forgotten to take it back when I had tackled him to the ground. I reached into the shoe to pull out the slip of paper sticking out of the top. There was a note on it, but it was too dark to read it. I set it back down on the table, figuring I could read it in the morning, and I finally climbed up into bed and fell asleep.
