Someone New
I watched as people twirled on the dance floor to Taylor Swift's 'Love Story'.
The place was dimmed but elegant chandeliers hung from the ceiling. My sister was dancing with a masked guy. Pfftt. Boring. I just want to go home! My feet are aching like hell from these stilettos! It's been like what? Three hours already since we've been here.
I still continued sipping from my fruit punch as I hummed to the song.
I looked around to see if there was any table available, but no. People were seated together in groups, chatting. My eyes stopped to see a very familiar face. Aha! Lara! The girl crying helplessly at the fountain. She looks elegant tonight. She only had a simple shiny back dress that falls to the floor and her hair was curled beautifully. Her eyes were simply dark. No one was with her and she was busy looking at her drink without even bothering to touch it. She looks pretty attractive, but she looks woebegone.
"Hey!" I greeted sprightly.
"Hello there Amy" She replied glumly.
"Alone? Wanna join me outside?"
"Sure thing. I really need someone to talk with." She gave me a weak smile.
I tugged her arm and led the way to the gigantic doors. We headed to the poolside area. Plopping down the side, I dipped my foot in the pool.
"Thank you for being a friend when nobody was there.." She started.
"What's wrong Lara?"
She breathed in deeply and held her hand closely to her heart. "I went through a broke-up and it was really hard. You know, I feel like I'm the only one fighting in that relationship. I never gave up even though it's what I've always wanted. He even had the guts to break-up with me. I fought for what? Eight months? And wow. I'm the bad guy." Her eyes displayed anger, hurt and sadness. "All of them are jerks."
"I'm.. sorry.. but.." I trailed off.
"But what?" She asked, confused.
"I think you shouldn't waste your tears over this guy, You girl, deserves a better one. The one who will make you believe that they're not all the same." I spoke, looking down at my feet. Lara, hugged me and burst out in tears.
"I'M TIRED OF PEOPLE HURTING ME! I'M AFRAID OF HURTING THEM BUT THEY NEVER STOP HURTING ME!" She sobbed.
" Hey. You will look like a retarded panda if you don't stop wailing.
She laughed and batted her lashes
"Waterproof."
"Lara, tell me that you're gonna be strong. You don't need to promise but please tell me you'll try."
"Amy, this will be the last time that I will cry over a damn jerk." She laughed.
We talked about the most random things. I saw how much we had in common. I realized that she understood my absolutely weird attitude and I found it easy to trust her.. She saw me differently, Andrea didn't even see me this way. Oh, she does but she doesn't understand me as well as Lara does.
"Berry Punch?" The waiter asked.
"Vodka please." The waiter stared at me and slightly nodded.
Lara's mouth hung open. "You wouldn't!" She spat.
"Oh I would."
"Oh come on! Have a fruit punch instead please?" Lara begged.
"No." I replied firmly. A few moments after, the waiter then arrived and offered us our drinks.
He gave Lara her blue colored juice and me.. Vodka. I swallowed hard before taking the contents in my mouth. I felt the back of my throat heat up. Ew! I'm so not drinking this again! Lara laughed all of a sudden.
"Your face was pricless." She smirked.
"Whatever Laraaa" I teased, prolonging the a. We talked and talked when all of a sudden, a guy approached our table. We whipped our heads to the side to see a guy in tux and his face covered by a half mask.
Even when he was wearing the mask, I knew pretty well who this guy is.
"Matt!" I greeted. He smiled at the two of us.
"By the way, Matt, this is Lara. Lara, this is Matt."
The next song played. Waltz, totally boring. Oh! l forgot Matt is still standing infront of us.
"Yes Matt?" I cocked my eyebrow at him. He held his hand out for me to take. I stared blankly at it.
"May I have this dance?"
I wanted to say no but Lara over here pushed me towards him. So suck it up. I have to do this dance. He snaked his strong hands around my waist and I placed my arm around his neck. We danced to the beat of the song. Woaw. This guy can dance! I just followed his moves and swayed to the music. I was closing my eyes until he finally spoke.
"Amy.. I really like you and I promise to never break your heart." He locked his eyes with mine.
"Matt, I don't believe in promises." I stated the obvious.
"I'm different and I can prove it to you Amy. Just let me."
"Matt, I'm just a waste of your time"
"I like..." He was about to say it again when I cut him off.
"Matt. Stop."
"Why Amy?" He looked me directly in the eyes with pure hurt.
"I don't know Matt." I spuned my heel and started walking away when Matt grabbed hold of my arm and made me face him.
It was just a matter of seconds when I saw Matt's face getting dangerously close to mine and before knowing it, I felt his lips on mine. My hands found their way right to his face. I slapped him. Hard.
Matt held his face and glared at me.
I immediately felt guilt the moment he stared. "I'm sorry Matt.. I shouldn't have.. I.."
I don't know what to say at this damn moment.
"You don't have to apologize Amy." He spoke as he cupped my cheek.
I wasn't able to say a word because Matt was walking past me already. I turned him around once more and hugged him
"Matt, we will always be friends." I whisphered as I let go.
"For now." He gave me a weak smile and continued walking past me..
