"do you wanna fuck him?"

"what the fuck, cal?" i rub my temples as i talk to my best friend. calum and i have been friends ever since we were young, up until now. that was the downside of leaving "home", i had to leave calum behind, too.

"i'm kidding," i hear him laugh over the phone "but does he turn you on?"

"huh?" i answer, taken aback by his question, "n-no. i mean, maybe. i guess. no."

busted.

"holy shit, rosie! you do get turned on. then go and get him!" he encourages me. i can hear the excitement in his voice.

i look down at my phone screen to double-check that it's not on loud speaker. wouldn't want this conversation to travel to the room next door.

"i'm honestly not sure," i say, "i don't know if it's right to put meaning to his actions especially when i don't know what his intentions are, you know? maybe he's just trying to get in my pants."

i look to my bedside table, eyeing the piece of paper he slid under my door when i first moved in here. i can see the words "you should join us next time." in his handwriting. i should really throw that out. why haven't i yet?

"yeah, i get it," calum says, and i can feel him nodding through the phone, "but, still. get him." he finishes with conviction in his voice.

"i don't even know why i called you," i shake my head even though he won't see it, "i need advice, cal. i need someone to think rationally with me."

i run a hand through my hair. this whole situation is starting to stress me out.

"okay, fine, i'll try to think rationally." he says, making fun of the word.

"c'mon, thomas," i groan, "i'm being serious over here."

"alright, sorry," he chuckles, "what if you wait for a couple of days to see what he really wants from you. you know, observe? see what he's more consistent at, if it's being a horny dude or a gentleman. you gotta update me, alright?"

in a more serious tone, he continues "and you know that you're always welcome in my place if things get too weird down there. honestly, i don't even know why you didn't consider staying here in the first place, rather than leaving entirely."

"yes, calum. but for the nth time, thanks for the offer but i wouldn't want to be at a place near him," i cringe, not even wanting to say the name of my father, "and i told you, right? this is me giving myself a completely fresh start."

"okay, i get it. take care over there, okay?" he tells me, "i don't know this luke person at all so i can't give you solid advice, but you're a smart girl and i'm pretty sure you know what's right and wrong. just tell me everything so i can help you in any way i know how to."

"yeah, you're right," i say, "thanks, bestie."

"alright, rosie. i have to go to the gym now."

"i have to go to the gym now." i mock, and i just know he's rolling his eyes.

"bye, starshine. update me, okay? miss and love you."

"i miss and love you too, cal." i say, then i end the call.

pick-up of now clean laundry from the second floor is today, so i prepare to stretch to help myself carry my load of laundry all the way from the second floor going here to the fourth floor.

i get up from the couch and begin to twist my back and stretch my arms. i'm not at all athletic, so this laundry-carrying is going to be a bit difficult for me.
